Transition 1
Comments: estimated...T1+T2=4:54 What would you do differently?: should lube my ankles Bike
Comments: Tried to go easy at start and wait for 30 minutes til hammering. I almost succeeded. Felt great most of the time, but my quads were definitely feeling it towards the end. There is a steep uphill at Toro Canyon at this point, but I powered up it anyways since I knew it's pretty much downhill after that. And passed a lot of people there... I knew I would be paying for it a little in the run, but I think the tradeoff was fine. food/bev: 2 bottles of gu2o (300cal), 1 h2o, 4x gu packets (400cal), 3 lavasalt tabs. What would you do differently?: i'm still trying to figure out the cramping thing... since I was taking a good amount of salt this time (and it wasn't hot like the last race) it may just be a fitness issue which I need to train away (or not overdo the bike part, which is difficult for me). But just to make sure, I'll try even more salt loading next time - see how it turns out if I actually take the gram/hour I've seen recommended. Also, it's time to get some aerobars. Transition 2
Comments: estimated...T1+T2=4:54 Couldn't find my rack for a sec, but the rest was nice anyways. Run
Comments: I had to stop for a minute or so right out of T2 to stretch my quads out, and that lasted me most of the way until I decided I was feeling pretty good about 3 miles out, and thought I could make up some time. Should have waited a bit, because THEN I hit the steep hill down to the beach, and that locked up my quads again. After a little stretching, I was up pretty quick... didn't catch the group I was with, but was still able to outsprint someone for the finish line. Food: 2 gu's, a pint or so of gatorade to wash it down. What would you do differently?: It was a good run, considering what I started with. Almost 13 minutes off my standalone time, but hey, I was happy I didn't have to stop and walk! Post race
Warm down: The volunteers at the finish line plastered my back with a couple of sponges that held a LOT of water, then I walked around, took off my shoes and cheered on some friends! What limited your ability to perform faster: The cramps definitely slowed me down on the run -- maybe I just need to take it a little easier on the bike. I felt like my legs on the run were the best when I had just enough gatorade to almost make me nauseous, now what does that mean? Event comments: First time doing this race, I'll definitely do this one in the future. Last updated: 2004-05-14 12:00 AM
