Like Inside Triathlon or Triathlete Magazine? Are they worth the money for a rookie?

I am about to renew my Triathlete magazine and this is the first month I have been disappointed I think it is a worthwhile expenditure.

I subscribe to Inside Tri and like it, but for someone at my stage (pre-triathlon) I find the information in this web site and the posts of the forum to be more helpful, more real world for the issues /questions I am facing.

I subscribe to Triathlete Mag, and like it. Nice assortment of basic training plans as well as more advanced stuff, so you can always have an eye on what it might be like to get good at this someday.

I especially like the features on different gear and equipment. Makes you very knowledgeable about all the different choices you have in tri gear, bikes, shoes, etc.

Plus, a nice swimsuit issue.

Can't recall which one I used to subscribe to.  Key words there being USED TO.  If you like looking at endless advertisements for bikes and other equipment, then by all means subscribe to one of them.  I found the one I subscribed to and others I've looked at in airports waiting for flights to be very light on content.  This website is much, much more helpful.

They are fun to read...worthwhile and learn a lot not really. I like look at the ads. Many of the articles are about pros and what they do...which I care nothing about as I like to read about BOPer who kick butt...not in any magazine but frequent here on BT.

I think you are better off becoming a BT Performance member and get real practical help geared for you.

I don't think Triathlete is worth it for a rookie, because beginner triathletes areare not their intended audience and not who they target their editorial content. It appears they target pro triathletes, age-group competitors, front-of-the-pack triathletes, and other "long time" triathletes.

And as someone said, Triathlete has a lot of coverage of the pros. I'm going to presume that rookies don't care much about which pro won which race, what their race strategy was, interviews with pros, up and coming pros, blah blah blah blah blah. It's 35% or more of the magazine's content. I don't much care myself.

But the ads are pretty fun.

I prefer Triathlete over Inside Triathlon. I think Triathlete presents a more in-depth magazine every month, when compared to the other. It does have a lot of pro coverage, and not much is geared towards newbies in the sport directly. But it has helped me to learn a ton about the sport, and some of the articles (especially Mitch Thrower and Scott Tinley) I find are some of the most consistently well written pieces in any sport magazine.

I like Triathlete for the Exterra coverage. As an aspiring off-road Triathlete, I have found their Exterra plans to be very good!

I subscribe to Triathlete and have learned a lot reading the articles in the training section. I have kept back copies and return to them 6 month later. The benefit of working up the learning curve is that that what did not make sense ther first time around seem to make sense the second time around

Considering that I have to pay and arm and a leg for them to send the mag to europe, I keep every copy.

BTW, the bike porn is pretty good.
