Setup Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 48m 26s
Overall Rank = 97/180
Age Group = Novice Male
Age Group Rank = 73/125
Pre-race routine:

Three Bagels, cup o' coffee....
Event warmup:

Walk from parking lot to Transition, wandering around trying to look like I knew what was going on... talking with Keith, Kevin, Tommy, Alice, Rob, Gygy and various other insane people who get up at 4am to race at 6:30am. Oh and cutting in line for the timing chip, it really was fatigue induced and not intentional.
Swim
  • 19m
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a horrible start to the swim. Swim was an out, a left around the bouys and back....with it being a group of novices everyone was off to the right but a few of us. I started out the first 50 to 100 was good, but a bit too fast, then the group to the right decided to move over next to the navigation bouys. I got plowed under by some other swimmer. From that point on...I just wanted to quit. But, it being Fathers day, Alice having gimp'ed through it Saturday, I sucked it up and kept going. Did a couple of 100yd on the back just kicking so I could catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on form! I kept getting hands in the middle of my leg telling me I was swimming up hill not down hill! If I am going to do Lake Logan I have got to improve...more LN OWS!
Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

Not too bad, always seems to be slow in this transition from Swim to Bike. Unless someone figures out how to deal with the blood movement when you go from horizontal to vertical not sure there is much I can do here...
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to have my shoes clipped in to the peddles so I can hope on the bike and ride into my shoes.
Bike
  • 55m 36s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

The break through of speed on the bike really came at the end. Not sure what happened, but really wish there were about 3 more miles on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Improve entry to bike (see above in T1), Improve ability to corner at speed...still nervous leaning into high speed corners, improve climbing...keeping speed up on the hills!
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to "hop" off the bike with out loosing speed, need to learn how to get out of my shoes while peddling...
Run
  • 28m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Would have been in the 8min/mile but took a fall from a root on the run just past halfway. Took skin off both knees and left a nice gash (that is now swollen) on the left ankle at the bend point! Also almost did three laps of the upper loop after a miscommunication with the event staff. That might have added a minute to my run.
What would you do differently?:

Not fall....not do 2 1/4 laps
Post race
Warm down:

Beer and hanging with friends trading war stories

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim form, Hills on the Bike, falling on the run.

Great job! You did a lot better than I did on my first Latta race! In regards to OWS, I'll be glad to drop you off in the middle of LN and follow you back to shore -- just let me know when.

Great race Jeff. Time to hit the age groupers. Your too good for the novice category. Your biking is getting a ton better. How bout Pinehurst?

Way to go Jeff...I think you're doing much better than you give yourself credit for!  Just imagine if work didn't keep interferring with your training--you'd be giving me a serious run for my money.  Your bike times are looking much stronger.  Great job!

Awesome RR and way to overcome the self-adversity in the water. With a bike leg like that I think it made up for the swim!
