Pre-race routine:

The usual. Up early. Drive to the race. Powerbars, coffee and water on the way.
Event warmup:

Put on the wetsuit and wait for the start.
Swim
  • 35m 8s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did little to preapre for the swim. Plus I had problems sighting because my new goggles kept filing up. At one point I actually swam in to the oncoming racers during the out and back. I estimate I could have cut 2 or 3 minutes off the swim time if I hadn't wandered around the course so badly. Still my time was only slightly above what I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not wander off course so badly.

Comments:

Based on my past performance I crushed this ride. I felt good the entire way, and I hit the bike hard. Climbing (to the extent there was any) went fine, but the flats felt great. I had consistent stretches where I was averaging above 20 mph. I was really happy with this ride.

Around mile 18 my stomach started cramping up, which unfortunately was foreshadowing of what the run would be like.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Comments:

This run was terrible in every way. Almost as soon as I got on the run course my stomach started cramping up, which slowed me down a lot. Add to that the amount of hills on this run course and I was left with a very disappointing run. My per mile time was alomost three minutes off my training average. It's unfortunate that I wasted a great bike leg with such a terrible run, but I'm not sure what else I could have done. The cramping just kept me slow.

Nice race, sorry to read about the cramping. The run was around 7 miles so don't be to hard on yourself. Alot of people wearing a GPS said that they had distances anywhere from 6.8-7.0 miles.

Sucks about the cramping. Any idea what could have caused it?

Congrats on a great ride. I had a blast on the bike course, too. The run course was tough, and to top it off the start of lap 2 came much later than expected. The folks with Garmins & Polar footpods concurred that the run course was about 7 mi instead of 6.2. Wish I knew that the run course was longer BEFORE the race.

My Garmin showed 7.14 miles for the run. The race website acknowledges the error and claims the course was 6.9 miles.

I also experienced bad cramping as soon as I started the run. Everytime I tried to take in fluids or gel it got worse and I was using the same stuff I train with all the time. I don't know what caused it but I need to figure it out before the Racine Half Distance.
