What is the deal with snapping turtle and a OWS swim in lake. Do they ever bother people? how do you avoid them? . I'm not really afraid of them, but I don't want get a bite, they can be large and do a bit of damage. I hear if you slap the water they don't like the vibration any truth to this?

thanks!

If it is true they don't like vibration then a crowd of 100+ swimmers is going to make them run like Homer Simpson towards a Duff Beer. I've never had any issues with Snapping Turtles, but have been nibbled by a Catfish while doing a recovery OWS.

I'm not worried about them in a race....I'm worried about them when I am training....I train in a small lake/really big pond.....it is safe (as safe as possible) to swim alone and I do (with people on the shore and buoys in the lake). I just don't want to lose a finger or two to a snapper!

Do you really NEED all of your fingers? I mean, that is a small price to pay for a good OWS session.

Unless you muck with it, it will totally leave you alone.  As a kid who constantly captured critters for the heck of it, I can tell you they don't want anything to do with you.  Even if you bumped into it accidentally (unlikely... it will know you're coming and scram) I would be shocked if it did anything other than swim away or take a defensive (mostly in shell - snappers can't get in as far as some turtles) posture.

A joke. Most threads of this nature are about sharks in the beach swims or alligators in FL.

Having swam in waters with snapping turtles (and snakes and who knows what else) all of my childhood, they won't mess with you. The only time we saw them was when we caught one, and the only time he snapped was when we made him mad.

Yeah -- Don't lollygag around wiggling your toes or float around with your willy out.

They will chomp down on something if they think it's food. But if you are swimming around, they will head for ze hills.

There are not many water animals that have the "fight" mechanism working in their brain, most are "flight" and will avoid a group of swimmers. Unless you are swimming with crocs, I wouldnt worry about it.

Where in CT are you?

Rumor has it that Seth (Marlborough Man) has seen several while swimming in Lake Terramuggus in Marlborough.
