Total Time = 1h 15m 34s
Overall Rank = 149/318
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/21
Pre-race routine:

As this was my first tri I wouldn't really say I had a routine. Got up about 4:30 to leave the house by 5:30. Goal was to get to the race site early so that I could take my time setting up. Ate normal breakfast and coffee and got everything loaded into the Tahoe. Got to the park at 6 and there were already quite a few people there.
Event warmup:

After I set up my transition area and got marked I wandered around for a while. Drank some water, used the porta potty. I was getting kind of anxious so I decided to go for a short run (about a mile). Got back and the first wave was getting ready to sign in. I got my cap and goggles and went for a quick swim. Got REALLY nervous in the water and knew I was kicking too hard. Got out quickly and tried to calm down as they called our group.
Swim
  • 13m 32s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

I panicked the first 100 yards. I was lined up back and to the left of the group. I really had a hard time getting into the groove of it. Wore myself out quickly and spent the rest of the time just trying to relax and keep going. caught my breath on a sandbar at about the 250 mark. After that the swim went much better.
What would you do differently?:

Swim... LOTS MORE!
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

It was a short distance to the transition. Had to walk in the grass b/c the path was a little rough barefoot. Only bad part is you had to watch for fire ants in the grass (there were a lot of them). I took my time and gathered myself and smiled b/c I had finshed the dreaded swim.
What would you do differently?:

Move a little quicker from the water exit to the rack.
Bike
  • 34m 49s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I was so far behind after the swim there was nothing to do but pass people... and I did. Lost track of how many people I passed but there were quite a few. Saw Tammy and Zack I was coming out of onto the course and waved. Zack yelled to me 'Go Daddy!'.

I thought maybe I was pushing too hard and my HRM was giving me some crazy numbers so I wasn't sure. The course did have one area of construction where you had to slow down and go through single file. It is also why they cut the course short.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder! I still had plenty left for the run. I should have pushed more and made up more time
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

My rack was right when you dismount off the bike. Need to remember that for the next one. Very convenient. Yankz quick laces are my friends. Slipped on shoes and away we go!
What would you do differently?:

I could dismount with shoes still attached but haven't tried yet.
Run
  • 23m 43s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Passed a few more people on the run. I really did feel great on the run. Better than I did in my last 5k. Had what felt like a nice easy pace and thought I was probably doing 8's but didn't even look at my watch to see. Surprised when I saw the finish time and I was doing 7:40's. Saw Zack and Tammy again as I and waved to them. Zack was busy eating a yogurt to wave back... go figure.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder! I didn't take any water and not sure if that was good or bad? I dumped 3 cups down my back which felt really good. I think I took in enough water on the bike and some gatorade but it messed with my stomach so I stopped.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw the guys from Try Sports and they congratulated me on finishing my first tri. Also talked to a couple of guys who own the pet food store I used to frequent. Caught up with Tammy and Zack. It had started to rain by then so we just grabbed some fruit and they headed out. I went back to transition to gather my stuff. Weird how it felt like it was over so quickly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim, Swim, Swim... ummm... Swim!

Event comments:

My First tri is completed. I thanked volunteers and police officers as I passed them. Overall a very good experience. I am ready to do it again. Next time I want to go FASTER!!!
