Total Time = 2h 25m 8s
Overall Rank = 42/117
Age Group = 35-39m
Age Group Rank = 10/14
Pre-race routine:

Well, this was odd since the event didn't begin until midnight. I did all the normal things one does on a Saturday - teach the 5 y.o. how to ride a bike, go to hear a band at Central Market, eat pasta, have a couple of beers, host friends at the house - and some not so normal, hydrate heavily, some warmup yoga and head to the race at bedtime.
Event warmup:

Just a quick jog to get adjusted.
Run
  • 2h 25m 8s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 09m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I had fun. I accomplished my goal of under 2 1/2 hours (and that was for a straight 15 mi, I forgot about the add'l 1/2 mile) and negative splits.
Overall among the men, I was 35th of 59.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

slammed my gatorade, walked around and watched for Texmom and Yoblondie. Ate some of the post race oranges and pasta, then went home to bed about 3:30

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only my own pacing goals - that and training. I ran the race I wanted to run.

Event comments:

There could have been one more drink station, but overall, a great event. Nice touch to provide headlamps at the last minute as the course was very dark in some places. Hope they can write off the expense. We also benefitted from unusually mild July Texas weather. The temp just as easily could have been in the 90s the whole race.

I'm glad to see a race report for this. I hadn't heard about it until late last week, but I'm definitely interested in trying it next year. Midnight's right about in my wheelhouse, much more so than 6am.

Great job, Doug.  This event sounds interesting, starting at midnight and all.  I'm glad you didn't find that too difficult.

I guess running a 5K loop wasn't too bad, huh?

The loop was cool as you could actually keep track of your splits.  Now, 10 times around might have been a bit much, though.

I didn’t realize you guys were running too… (I did see a few SUVs w/ the USAT stickers though.) It would have been nice meeting y’all.

The temp was much cooler than the condition we normally have in July which certainly made ‘going long’ much easier.

It did feel weird running during the hours I normally have a sound sleep – the adrenaline kept the body moving while the drowsiness slowly crept in.

Somewhere on my 4th loop, an ATV driven by a volunteer (or a cop) shined its headlight directly into my eyes. I tumbled and did a face plant into a pile of dirt!! Lol.

Somehow, there’s a discrepancy w/ the # of loops I ran and the # they logged in. Just before I headed out for the last loop, I checked with one of the ‘lap counters’ and was surprised to be told that she only logged in 5 loops. (She thought I was beginning on the 6th loop!!) It’s understandable though… as there were 200 people running on the same loop over and over… ;) Anyway, I emailed the RD along w/ the splits of each 5K as well as the accumulative times that are stored in my watch.

Apparently there’s a second Sheriff’s star shape medal given to 50K finishers and I LOST it!!

The more I think about this race, the better it gets!  Great run, DB.  We lucked out with the weather too!  Not quite El Scorcho...Hopefully they'll fix the lighting issues for next year!

After reading the article about the race director it puts the whole race in a new perspective. It was actually pretty darn well organized for a first time race and a first time race director, plus the fact that it only cost $25 definitely made it worth it! Great job out there, I think it helped you to start off slow with Ang and I.

Good job Doug!  Must've been weird running so late at night but nice to be so much cooler than the day.  Great race...

Nice job on the run. The weather really cooperated for you. Would the beers, earlier in the day, be considered carbo loading?

Doug - Great run! That had to be a really neat experience. There's no way I would have the endurance for something like that now, but a midnight race would be something I'd love to try in the future.

Carbo loading was the only way I could justify them, that and not wanting to vary my routine too much.
