Total Time = 1h 07m 51s
Overall Rank = 331/1600
Age Group = Male 35-39
Age Group Rank = 51/131
Pre-race routine:

Hung out with freinds talking. I met Dolly (Darlene)Ate a Cliff bar 1 hour before wave start.
Event warmup:

None!!! We almost missed our wave start because we were talking. We ran to the water trying to zip up our wetsuits while running. I swam to the start line when they said 30 seconds. Then off we went!
Swim
  • 08m 16s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

At the beginning everyone around me was swimming all over the place. I had to pull up several times in the first 100 meters or so. I was 3:09 faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Move to the outside instead of the middle of the pack.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 & T2 times were included in the bike time
What would you do differently?:

Nothiing
Bike
  • 34m 40s
  • 9.3 miles
  • 16.10 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike wouldn't shift out of the large chainring. At first I thought that would be a problem, but it ended up being good for me. I kept a good pace going although I don't know what it was. I'm sure I was over 20 mph. I got passed by a few people but passed a lot of other people. This was :58 fatser than last year
What would you do differently?:

Don't have Trek work on my bike before a race.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Last year I felt really tight starting the run, but not this time
Run
  • 25m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I usually get passed a few feet from the run start, then the flood gates open and I just try to finish. This time I felt really good on the run. I got passed after about 1/8 of a mile but the guy who passed me didn't pull away from me. Then I figured I could run with him. I got passed by a few people but not as many as before, that is what kept me running. I started to get tired but realized I was only 1 mile from the finish. I would have to run a 16 min/mile to not beat last years time and the east side of the overpass has a longer downhill than uphill. That is what helped push me to the finish line. I have to check, but I think this was my fastest 5k ever! I am usually a 10 mn/miler so 8 something is good for me.The run was 1:44 fastert han last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

hung out talking to freinds. I was looking for BlueRover and Dolly who I knew started after me. I saw BlueRover coming out of the water then got a Jamba Juice and went home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being a faster runner

Event comments:

I was 7 min faster than last year and 10 min faster than the year before that.

Sounds like a great race - I was staying at the Hilton Mission Bay until Friday last week and ran round Fiesta Island in the mornings, but couldn't stay on for the race itself unfortunately. Where did the swim course go - was it near Fistea Island or further along?

Good result.

It was on the other side of the bay. At Ski beach. If you were on the west side of Fiesta Island and looked west you would see it. Too bad we couldn't get together for a ride while you were here.

I would love to have got together with you and some of the other SD regulars but sadly was hosting some clients at a conference, so was 'on duty' 24/7. I'm over several times a year so maybe next time I'll have more luck. It will probably be Feb next time and we often stay at Rancho Bernado as its nearer our office, but I may be able to get to the city at some point - a bike will be more of a challenge but could no doubt rent one.

Were you at the La Jolla 10 km swim the previous weekend? I caught the end of it on Sunday lunchtime and saw the medals being given out for the people who swam the whole thing instead of doing the relay.

Congratulations on a great race! We're in the same division, and seeing your overall time, I finished just 8 seconds ahead of you. Great job on the swim. I thought there was probably a current, as my swim time was much better than last year, and didn't think that I'd improved THAT much.

8 Seconds!!! That means you passed me on the bridge coming into the finish. Steve, I think we need to meet. Looks like I have a new person to compete with! Congrats on your 21 min 5K. That is my ultimate goal, to get down to 21 min. Great race. Let me know what races you are doing next year, then I will get you
