Pre-race routine:

Several weeks ago I realized that a solid training weekend was going to be far more important than a decent 1/2 IM so I decided to make it an ironman weekend. I swam 1.2 on Friday, then on Saturday morning ran a local race (11 miler with a 2.1 mile warmup) then jumped on the bike and rode 56. I knew I wouldn't be fresh for this race, but it would make for a great weekend of training.

Surprisingly when I woke up on Sunday I felt great. Got to the race site at 5:30 and set things up.
Event warmup:

No warmup for me, that's what the swim is for in a 1/2.
Swim
  • 43m 43s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was fairly uneventful except that I was terribly slow. This is a new low point for me as far as 1/2 IM swims go. A personal worst by 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the pool more, a LOT more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Smooth T1.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 44s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

The first 25 miles of the bike felt great. My legs felt as though I hadn't done a thing the day before. I was averaging about 21 mph and was holding back. At about 30 miles was where we started to encounter hills. I simply had nothing in the tank to handle uphills. All I could do was spin and try to not lose too much time. The ride back to Chisago City from the valley was into a slight headwind and I was able to pick my average back up some on the way back.

This course had the worst quality in roads of any race I have ever done. They were horrible and made the ride unfomfortable for a good share of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Tactically I probably rode the 56 as smart as possible.
Transition 2
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

I have refined my T2 to pull a few more seconds off and now I think I've gotten to the point where the only way to improve here is to simply run faster through transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 47m 59s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Here was the nicest surprise of the day, my legs felt great off the bike. I was very worried that by the time I started running that the previous day's activities would catch up to me....not the case! I started by trying to run 8:30-9:00 miles and was somewhere in the low end of that range for the first two. After that I was able to stay at or slightly below 8:30s until mile 8 where I decided to simply pick it up because I was feeling great still. I'm not sure exactly how fast I was running from mile 8 on, but most of teh miles had to be sub 8s because I ended up averaging 8:14. This was a huge boost to my confidence moving forward to IMWI. I have gotten much better at staying fresh off the bike and having good runs at this distance and I hope I can keep it up.

It was great to see my wife and 3 of my kids (baby stayed with Grandma) at the finish. I love the fact that they enjoy watching me race, even though they don't get to see me race often.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing.
Post race
Warm down:

After the race I grabbed some meatballs and pancakes (strange combo, I know) and then we headed out rather quickly because it was past lunch time and everyone was hungry.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swim training & lack of a taper.

Event comments:

The organization was ok, could be better.

Nice job!  I wish I could have said the same of the run!   I totally agree that the roads were horrible in some spots, but completely wonderful in others.  And yes, the hill coming out of the river valley seemed to take for ever!
