Pre-race routine:

I slept in my Xterra the night before the race. I do this all the time so it was no big thing. I couldn't afford to stay in a hotel and I didn't want to drive out the morning of the race.
Event warmup:

My warm up consisted of pushing a guys car out of the mud and about a 100 meter swim.
Swim
  • 16m 53s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

My pace was faster at IMAZ. I don't know what the hell happened. I kept going to the left. What's up with that? Pain in the ass if you ask me!:)
What would you do differently?:

Gone straight
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

T1 was hell on your feet. The ground was a cross between chip seal and gravel.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing could be done differently. The transition area was rough on the feet so I am happy with what I did.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 35s
  • 27.9 miles
  • 20.27 mile/hr
Comments:

The roads were chip seal and it was raining. Not a good combination. I was in pack of 4 guys who I have all raced before. We went back and fourth a bunch of times until mile 25 when I put everyone away on the last big hill. I was scared shitless a few times because we were flying downhill and there was standing water at the bottom of the hill. With the roads being wet and the brakes weren't really working all that well it made for an interesting ride.
What would you do differently?:

I should have slowed down for the water stop because I needed the water but I decided to try the hand up. I missed 2 bottles. Thanks to Brent Drake for handing me what he had left of his bottle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Once again the ground was killer on the feet so I kept my shoes on when dismounting. It made for a slippery run but it was better than killing my feet.
Run
  • 45m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 1.5 miles I felt like shit. But after that I started feeling a lot better. I ran negative splits the rest of the way and only gave up 4 positions on the run.
Mile 1- 7:36
Mile 2- 7:18
Mile 3- 7:12
Mile 4- 6:45
Mile 5- 7:57
Mile 6- 6:46
Post race
Warm down:

I drank beer and stayed wet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather was a huge factor. Plus some piece of shit stole my gu while I was doing a warm up in the water. Assclown!

Event comments:

Going into this race I knew the race organizers had a rep for being below average. They didn't disappoint! The post race food blew and they never seemed organized. Parking for the event was a horror show and a ton of people had to have their cars towed out of the mud. I will probably not go back to this race or recommend this to anyone else.

Congratulations on a great race!  Particularly impressive on the bike!

Check out the swim times of the M30-34 group.  Do they look unbelievably fast, as in a mistake was made?  I'm betting that the entire group got at 3 minute break on the swim due to a wave start problem.  Any thoughts?

Great job on the bike despite the tough conditions. My rear wheel slipped a few times out there and I know a few folks who went down.

It was my first race they've hosted and I think it will be my last. Did you stick around for the awards? Not an impressive display at all...

Great job on a tough course in tough conditions.

I did this race last year as my first Oly and I was less than impressed with the organization. I didn't and won't be going back.

I don't see any really fast times for that group. Maybe they fixed it. But I would not be surprised if there was a delay or some mix up like that. Again, the race organization was pretty bad.

Yeah, I stuck around and grabbed some awards for folks that I knew that weren't there. There were only about 20 of us around for the awards ceremony.

Another note: The way they posted results was just wrong. They posted the swim times and then they posted the bikes times. They never posted the overall results at the race. In my experience that's what most people want to see when they are at the race site. They want to know how they did over all or in AG, not how they did by swim, bike or run. They can check that out when they get home. It was like they did it on purpose to keep people hanging around. If that's the case that total BS.

At first glace the M25-34 swim results are believable as nobody had a time that was impossible.  But what doesn't make sense is that the fastest swimmer, according to the results, finished the swim 23 seconds before my wave started.  That definitely didn't happen!  Normally my swim time is around the top 10% of most any age group, but placed in M30-34 I'd be #21 of 24 (15:11).  Not likely!

FWIW, I got an email from the race director saying they'd be making corrections.

I hope those corrections include taking some time off of my swim. Ha!!!!!!!! That would be nice.

I would believe it if the swim times were a little fast. I am not a strong swimmer and was surprised by my time.

While you're swim time won't be lowered, you may very well move from unlucky #13 finish to an even dozen!
