Age Group Rank = 4/10
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45am, dress and have breakfast (1/2 pb bagel, banana, yogurt)

Got there at 6am while everything was still dark. Followed the cars into the parking area and knew immediately that we were in trouble. I started slipping and sliding all over. Finally got through one rough patch only to hit another. I ended up parking right where I landed/got stuck. There was nothing I could do so I refocused on getting my bike and stuff out.
Event warmup:

Set-up transition and the ran/swam a little.
Swim
  • 19m 21s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Considering I had to stop three times due to leaky goggles and my navigation was better than usual but still needs major help this isn't bad. It was a very foggy swim and needed more bouys. I used the rescue boats to site on.

I felt good and strong just fustrated with my sighting.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing OWS sighting...Can you buy bouys?
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Bike
  • 1h 43m 37s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 16.19 mile/hr
Comments:

By the time we got out of the swim it was drizzling heavily. Slowed us down on the corners. Not worth the road rash for a couple seconds.
This is a tough course and one of my training rides that I do for hill work every now and then. I usually have trouble nailing my nutrition on this route because it is constant rollers and you don't ever have a real flat section to get into a rhythm. This time was different I drank one bottle of Infinit and timed my gu perfectly. Course still wasn't picnic but better. On the down side I dropped my chain and wrapped it tight. I had to get off, unhook my aero bottle and turn my bike upside down to get it unwedged. I seriouly thought I was going to have to sag it because it wouldn't budge. This little issue cost me AT LEAST 4 minutes and hardware!!!! :(
What would you do differently?:

I have a third ring on my bike that I insisted on keeping when I bought my new bike and when I switch down I have to be VERY careful when going from the big ring to the middle or it drops all the way to the third, if I would take it off I wouldn't have a problem. However, it's my security blanket and I'm afraid I'll need it for CDA. Any suggestions?
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Since I set up a regular transition before the rain my socks were wet so I took time to dig out my spare pair out of my bag.

What would you do differently?:

Put my shoes in a plastic bag...I even stopped and picked one up before the race and decided it wasn't going to rain and I didn't need it. Should have listened to my gut.
Run
  • 51m 17s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a FANTASTIC run for me.

Rocky run start...literally. The first mile is over a damn with crushed gravel etc. With the rain it was a muddy mess. I ran with a small bottle of Infinit and took one Gu at mile three. I walked the water stations.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate the post meal with Family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather,

Event comments:

Race Director needs to find another timing partner. I stayed until the awards to get an idea of how I did and only after everything was given out was I able to look at the results. They only posted overall rankings for swim and bike which are pretty worthless on their own.

Nice race, especially the run!  Too bad about the chain problem...

Did you get your car out of the mud OK?  After seeing a few cars skidding around out there that morning we decided to park on asphalt.

I actually had to be pulled out. I was there early and asphalt wasn't an option yet.  They had the road closed.  I am assuming after they saw me and six others they decided to get smart. lol.

No biggie.

Great job on a tough course under tough conditions. That smokin' run split made up a lot time against the course and your AG.

Mechanical issues are a huge hassle, but you just gotta deal with them and that's just what you did. This sport is all about dealing with what the race brings to you and what you bring to the race.

Way to go and we'll be seeing you at a race down the road...
