Pre-race routine:

not a lot of sleep last night (or all this week, for that matter). woke up around 6am (not by choice - the girls both woke up early). had some oatmeal with honey and milk, a wee bit of coffee ('cause i needed it!), then headed out.
Event warmup:

did a little jogging with ella (so, not too fast). stretched. checked out some of the event booths. downed a clif shot and some water before heading out.

Comments:

this was my first 10k, and i'm very happy with how i did. i tried to hold back a bit since i have my first half-marathon next weekend, but still felt like i had a good race. i'm really happy that i brought my new water bottle pack. there were only a few water stations on the run and i might have hit a wall if i didn't have my own water with me. also gave me a chance to try it out on a longer run before the half marathon. also, i started towards the back of the pack this time, since i was planning on going more slowly. it was great to actually pass some people instead of the other way around!
What would you do differently?:

i still need to work on pacing. everything was fine and i had steam to spare, sprinting to the finish line...but i set a goal to go slowly the first two miles and i didn't accomplish that goal. this was a good place to test some of the pacing i want to try at the half marathon, and i didn't really stick with my plan. oh well. it was still a good race!
Post race
Warm down:

did a 1k kids' run with my 3-year old, ella. she had a great time, but at about 1/2k she wanted me to carry her. so, we walked for a bit, than ran some more. she did great. all the kids got a ribbon and a free t-shirt! stretched a bit, had a bagel, then headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i'm still learning how to pace myself.

Event comments:

i don't have a vast race experience, but this was a great race for a family. there were two different kids races, free arts & crafts for the kids, kid tattoos, face painting, a climbing wall, a stage with music and a yoga instructor who geared her yoga towards the kids. ella had a GREAT time. plus, it is a beautiful park to race in. this one is on the calendar for next year for sure!

there was no chip for this race. race results will be available online in a day or two. for now, i'm just going off my own watch. will post pictures soon!

Age Group: 65/83
Overall: 325/378
Performance: Good
tried to keep my pace slow for the first couple miles, but i was having a hard time. crossed the one mile mark in about 10 minutes (which is an average pace for me now - i was planning on going slower, more like 11-12 min miles). average hr of 168 for the first 2 miles was also higher than i wanted (was hoping to keep it in the 140s). still, i felt good. average hr for the last 4.2 miles was 176 (again, higher than i would have hoped, but i felt good).
Course: BEAUTIFUL! the run was not really a trail run. 75% of it was on paved bike path, meandering through the elm creek park reserve. about 25% was on either paved road or gravel road. mild rolling hills, lots of shade, gorgeous environment. we even saw a raccoon washing his hands in a pond on the way in! it was so beautiful today, leaves are at their fall peak - it was a perfect day for a run like this.

Great race Autumn...a good time for your first 10-K too.  Sounds like you have the same philosophy as me regarding the water bottle.  I carry my own too, because I find it so darned hard to drink from those paper cups.  Sipping from a water bottle at regular intervals is much easier.  Yes, work on the pacing too, I am now up to half marathon distance and I find starting easy for the first mile or two makes a big difference.  I still tend to run out of gas during the last couple miles...I just need to train more!

finally posted the results online. even with 10 min miles i was a BOPper for this race. oh well, i'm still happy with how i did. i have to remind myself that back in march, when i did my first 5k, i had to walk quite a bit of it.

i know it! we're supposed to have a 30% chance of mixed rain and snow here on friday night! i almost hope it is snow, since muddy paths would be a pain to run on for that distance. frozen mud is so much better!

if you aren't doing a marathon the weekend of autumn woods next year, you should do it. its one of the prettiest races i've done (not that i've done many, but still - beautiful!)

have any plans to do grandma's? if saturday's race goes well, i may have to rethink doing the bjorkland.

I'd not given any thought to doing any runs other than repeating the Whistlestop. Though the idea of hanging out in Canal Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon has definite appeal...
