Subject: how to stay motivated w/o a race?
Hi all,
I have gone back and forth, but finally decided that I am no where near ready to compete in my first oly. I'm still doing sprints in 1:44!

When I made the decision, I immediately lost the drive to train (though obviously I wasn't doing enough to begin with!) At this point I'll be training for next year and feel like whatever I do will just get "lost" over the winter.

Any pep talks?

Mitzi

Mitzi, sign up for another sprint. Come support the BTers and party with us at Cranberry and you'll be motivated to do it next year.

First year I was going to do it, I changed my mind after doing my first Oly. I went, watched, volunteered and was excited to do it in '06, and can't wait until this year.

My last tri of the season will be in 8 days. After that, there may be a 5k to do with my son, or a 10k, or a bike ride. The motivation will be primarily to focus on building a base for next year. This is only my first FULL tri season, and it seems that it takes at least a few years to build up strength and endurance in your legs, especially for the bike. Training with a HRM, I've seen my speeds in the zones increase some this year, so I'll continue to put in a lot of work in the lower zones. That will be a measure of progress, even without a race. Think of the races you will be repeating and how you'd like to beat those times next year. Training through the winter will make that very doable. A bike trainer got can help for when the roads are snowy and icy.

Kathy is right on to suggest getting out for another sprint or to volunteer. Keep your head in the game!

My sprint before my first ole was > 1:30.  I did the oly anyways.  You don't need to "qualify" for an oly.  Just come out and have some fun.

Now I'm questioning my own situation... I did a sprint (my first tri) in April in 1:37 - not great. My first Oly (second tri) is Sept 1. It never occurred to me to not go because of my slower finish in April! Do you have a certain time that you feel you MUST hit in order to do the Oly? Anyway, I know that is not the purpose for your thread, just thought I'd throw that out there.

I'm grappling with the same question through the off season - I think signing up for various running races is a great plan. It will be harder to train without a big race goal, and I'm not sure how it will be. I'm also playing soccer this fall, so that will be a fun diversion. Maybe find some organized sport that you enjoy to get involved in? Hope that helps...

No! NONONONONO! There is no "qualifying" for longer distance races!

Yeah; I was going to suggest sports, or group runs/rides. Look, off-season sports are not "diversions" from tri; just like rest is the fourth discipline for tri training, learning to take productive time off from training is important to helping you improve when you come back to the sport.

I still don't know why we're talking about the off-season already, there's plenty of races still to go. I'm only halfway through my season . . .

Just goo do the oly, if you have not missed it. As said before there is "qualifying". My first tri -ever was an Oly. I was/am hooked!

As NIKE says - Just do it (and have fun)! That will keep you motivated for next year!

Sign up for the oly. I did my first this year, and it was such an awesome experience. I was slow, but just like a sprint, it's all about training and finishing. Or, sign up for a marathon. That's what I did after my first and only sprint in 2005. Starting off 2006 with a marathon definitely kept me training.

I also find the scale motivating...

Best way to stay motivated is to always have something on your schedule.  Give yourself breaks when you need them, but keeping something on the horizon is always a sure fire way to keep things going for me.

Hell, I've already had to pony up some big bucks for two races for next year!  Nothing like sinking a bunch of cash into something to keep you committed!

I would like to add that having concrete and achievable (or seemingly achievable) goals for your training is a really good way to "stay in the game"

For me, for instance, I am currently working on running speed and I have set goals for how to run my treadmill workouts. I have a longer-term goal for a fast (for me) 5k, but I have specific goals for each workout, making those is very intrinsically motivating.

But you did the sprint right? You trained for it and you did it, and probably will do more right? Thats awsome. I have been training for my first sprint since Feb 07', When I do my cardio workouts I do 15 miles on a bike and run 3 miles every other day. I did this to prepare for my first tri, however I'm scared to do it for some reason. You got over that fear and probably are very comfortable doing it, your jsut taking it to the next level. Wish I had that kind of courage, so go for it and conquer that oly.

I say do the Oly......

I've done 2 sprints this year and want to give myself a big focus for my last tri of the season...hence an Oly.....i know i will complete it and i'm only racing myself so time is not an issue to me...for me motivation is signing up for something.....i have a half mary and a duathalon in sept....then I want to do a full marathon early next year....that will depend on how the winter is and training.....

I knew I should reach out here. You guys got me so psyched!!

My biggest problem is I struggled to do the 400 yds in my sprint a few weeks ago. I'm up to a mile in a pool, but not sure that will translate into an open water swim (no walls to grab each lap, even if ever so quickly).

Kathy,
I love your idea about volunteering. I will definitely be joining you guys for dinner and to help out the next day (if I go through with not doing it, you all got me thinking...)

How long until your oly? Just like in sprints, there are slow swimmers and dogpaddlers and everybody else in an oly. Or, sign up for another sprint. I think what we're all saying is to find a race, pay for it, and get to training!

I agree with D.K. I did my first sprint in 1:30 and moved up to the Oly. I've done a handful of sprints, 1 Oly and 1 HIM. I progressed to the longer distances to see if I could "finish" them. I haven't stepped up to the Ironman as of yet, I know that will take a lot more training and planning.
