Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site around 6:00 and picked up my race packet. Had PB&J walking to the transition area. Set up my stuff and realized I had forgotten my goggles. (I knew I was missing something!) Luckily, Mindy, my hero, had an extra.
Event warmup:

A little swim to warm up and test the goggles. The water was really warm and yucky.
Swim
  • 08m 21s
  • 366 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

I absolutely hated this swim. This is by far the worst swim ever! First of all, I got kicked in the face on three separate occasions. Once, my goggles were kicked off and I had to float on my back to fix it. I guess I got caught in a really bad spot b/c I was struggling to find a decent space to swim pretty much the entire time. It was all arms and legs for a while. By the time I had a little space to myself, the swim was over. Never got in the rhythm and it was too short.
What would you do differently?:

Go out faster and not get caught in the crowd. Don't do a 400 yard swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

I would like to get faster and faster here. Didn't use gloves/socks for this sprint which was the right choice.
Bike
  • 46m 1s
  • 13 miles
  • 16.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I really didn't expect a PR here since I haven't been riding much. I think I only had less than 50 miles on the bike in June/July combined. For that reason, I knew I wasn't going to do too well here. I didn't push it too hard but I stayed in a comfortable pace. Some of the hills were definitely challenging to ride.
What would you do differently?:

Only way to improve the time is to ride more. I need to do more hill training if I don't want to suffer!
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Again, I'd like to learn to cut more time.
Run
  • 30m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

When I first started running, it took a litter longer than usual to find my pace. After about a mile, I tried to pick up the pace and stayed in it as long as possible. I didn't feel particularly strong or weak. I thought that I ran a faster 5 K under 30 minutes since I recorded around 27 minutes on my watch but the official result indicates otherwise.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and cooled down. Got a complimentary massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well, this race was more of a check point for me. Since I didn't really get to train in June/July, I don't know what I was expecting.

Event comments:

Overall, I had fun doing this race. I think it was well organized and I enjoyed racing with many people from NAMC and TNT. Since it was a sprint, I was able to race decently, but I think if it had been a longer tri, I would have suffered.

It was nice to meet you at the race. ANd congrats on your time. I know you have been out of the country for awhile so it is impressive that you can come back and jump back in. YOur run time is awesome especially considering those hills. I can run a 30 min5K as well, bu the hills killed me that day. Way to go!

Great job on Sunday! When I saw you on the run you looked strong and had a good time for your 5k. I'm glad my goggles worked for you, that swim was rough! It was great to see you and hang out at the race and after!

I did not know you were doing this race. You did great though, especially after having been gone all summer.

It was nice to meet you on Sunday!  You did a great job out there, especially given your travel-created training limitations in June and July.
