Subject: What causes a 12-hour fever?
I have been trying to diagnose a little illness I just got. The only symptoms were a very intense fever and body aches that went away after 12-16 hours. There were no respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms, so I'm a little baffled. Any ideas?

Likely something viral.  No real way to tell you anything more than that.

what do you mean by intense. If its over 104 (aka high grade) you should go to the hospital in case its menigitis. if its low grade then it may be a bacterial infection. If it doesnt go away in 24 hours call your doctor. Could be staph of something.

Errr....not really sure any of that is relevant.  It went away, and none of his symptoms are consistent with any of that.

Unfortunately I didn't have a thermometer, so I don't know exactly how bad it was, but at one point I was considering going to the hospital. I just don't understand how it could come and go so quickly. Is it possible to get food poisoning that doesn't result in throwing up? I did eat a suspiciously disgusting lunch that day.

I had the same problem years ago and I consulted my doctor. I don't remember my doctor's advice, but she gave me a prescription of what medicine should I take and vitamins to strengthen my immune system.
