Luray, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 53s
Overall Rank = 56/199
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and went to breakfast ath the hotel. I had a Belgian waffle and two eggs.....works for me. Took photos with the giant fiberglass statue of Johnny Appleseed outside the restaurant.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit. I was shocked to learn that overnight the water had gone from 83 degrees to 76 according to the USAT officials, and I had decided not to bring my wetsuit. THere's a lesson in that for sure.
Swim
  • 17m 40s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was a complete clusterf**k for me. I got in the middle of the back behind some folks who swam worse than me and I could not get around them. I swam over people (a first for me) I got pawed, elbowed, kicked, and swallowed some water. I was not a happy camper in the water.
What would you do differently?:

Position myself to the outside of the pack and more toward the front, I can swim faster than mytime shows.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

T1 went prety well, my shoes were a little sticky going onto my feet and it took me longer than I would have liked to get up to speed, Still I had the second fastest T1 in my AG, so I really shouldn't complain
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect, not much.
Bike
  • 52m 55s
  • 16 miles
  • 18.14 mile/hr
Comments:

The course is mis-measured. I had 17.5 miles both in my car and on the bike computer. I passed about 100 people and only got passed by one guy. A guy on a blace cervelo with a flapping blue jersey. We went back and forth about 3-4 times on the back side of the course, and I finally started thinking about the run and just let him go.
What would you do differently?:

I might have been able to attack the course a little more agressively. If I do this race another year, I should have a better bike. There were some deceptively tough and long false flat sections.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

I had a little trouble getting the tungue of my running shoes to not bunch up and that cost me some time.
Run
  • 24m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I managed to hold a steady (albeit slow)pace
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Post race
Event comments:

It is a good race. I would do it again.
