Total Time = 5h 15m 28s
Overall Rank = 256/1017
Age Group = M4044
Age Group Rank = 46/185
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am. Packed up and headed out. Stopped for a bagel on the way and sipped H2O
Event warmup:

So much time waiting in line for a potty, so only time for swim warm up.
Swim
  • 40m 32s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Obvioulsy, the swim remains an area with major needs of focus and improvement. I was a bit surprised with my time coming out of the water, because I seemed to be pushing it strong the entire way, and in fact, thought I was heading for a PR. When I got out of the water and checked my watch and saw that I was over 40 minutes, I was really shoked. I believe the course was longer than 2112 yds by probably 200-400.
What would you do differently?:

More swim focus this winter and in my training in general. Time to join a masters group I think.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

One of my better efforts in T1, but still room for improvements.
Bike
  • 2h 48m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.99 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to try to average 20-20.5mph and I was pretty much at the lower range, so I don't have much to be sorry about here. I may have pushed it a little too hard, which made the run more difficult.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

A few minor problems here. I struggled a bit with gettin my running shoes on. I think I still need to fine tune the Yankz. Also, I lost a few seconds trying to get the garmin to switch from bike to run mode. I entered the menu instead of switching and in my rush and frustration, forgot how to get out of the menu.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I need to practice more with switching the Garmin and probably loosen the yankz a bit more.
Run
  • 1h 42m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I feel like this was the biggest disaster of the event for me although it is the only leg of the race where my rank was actually higher than my overall rank, so it was still the strong piece for me, I guess. I had major trouble with cramping, especially in my quad muscle (specifically, the one which is above and to the inside of the knee)
What would you do differently?:

I need to improve my extensive endurance in order to build on the running base I have.

Endurance

Event comments:

I agree with others RR's that Keith does a great job with these events. I did Mooseman in June as well and both were well organized and plenty of help and volunteers along the way. Both were great ways to enter into the HIM arena!

Good job toughing it out. I think we were both surprise a little on how difficult this race was. It wasn't made any easier for you with being sick all week. I'm looking forward to getting out there on some long fall rides with you, IMLP is only 11 months away....

Great, solid effort out there Mike. I'm sure that your body was still recovering from the illness you had last week. You're in a great position already for IMLP - your endurance is already strong and you have a lot of time to build up the bike and run even more.
