Subject: Dizziness after a week of loads of swimming normal?

I know this isn't a medical website -- and I know I saw something about dizziness a while back but I coulnd't find the thread... But I figured you guys have more experience with this stuff than anybody!

Last week started with my race swimming in the lake. Followed by the most yards of swimming I've ever done in one week (I'm in the boys vs girls run/swim challenge).

Yesterday, I noticed that I was dizzy off and on throughout the day. And not a hypoglycemia-kind-of dizzy. This was more like verdigo-type of dizzy.

You know how it feels when you have been travelling all day and you finally rest your head on the pillow?  You still feel like you're moving. That was the feeling -- especially if I tilted my head back or to the right side; and when I laid down last night.

It doesn't seem as bad today.  I am noticing little twinges of aching in my left ear - but at this point I'm so hyper-attuned to it, it could be psychosomatic.  I do have allergies and we have had a big shift in the weather (colder/wetter) in the last 3 days.  I wonder if it could be those things and not necessarily an inner-ear / swimming thing?

Anyone ever experience this?  I'm not one to run to the doctor but need to decide if I should or wait and see -- I'm taking the day off from work tomorrow to take my nieces to the beach and would hate for it to get ruined.

Maybe you have an ear infection.

I've had that problem a few times.  It was either an ear infection, a sinus infection, or water got in my ears and was trapped.

Yep - doctor said "Vertigo, nothing you can do but wait and it will go away".  It did.  Something was wrong in my middle ear (water or virus) but it was not a bacterial infection, so nothing could be done to clear it up sooner.

I'm no medic at all, but I would suppose your balance is being bothered by some infection in the ear(s). Ear infections are easier to catch if you swim a lot because the water dilutes and washes away the natural protection your have against bacteria in your ears: the wax (heard this on the radio a few weeks ago).
If it's not gone soon I'd go see a doctor.

Thanks!  I think I'll give it a few more days.  Eat plenty of healthy foods, drink plenty of fluids and sweat a lot.  See if that helps!

you may want to get some ear drops to help dry out your ear, or if you have rubbing alcohol i would put some in your ears and see if that helps dry things out.

good luck

The real question is: Why are you so interested in being normal?

Subject: UPDATE

Saw the specialist today.  He says it's vertigo caused by a virus.  Give it 2-3 weeks and it should clear up. (Great. I forgot to ask if this means I shouldn't drink??? ;-)

I can keep swimming.  Yippie!
