Subject: Race scam - a warning to all triathletes
A friend of mine, who had been training all year for her first 1/2 Ironman distance race, had quite the story to tell after she got back from the Harrison Hot Springs race a few weeks ago.

http://www.triathlons.net/

Basically, the whole race was a scam. All sorts of problems, here are just a few:

- Race started an hour late since the swim course had not been set up yet
- All distances were wrong (short swim, long run and bike)
- Only 2 aid stations on the whole race, poorly stocked (some stale cookies and maybe water if you were lucky)
- Swim was in a slough on a native reserve, instead of in Harrison Bay as promised
- Bike start was a good 500m from swim finish, across a muddy, rocky field
- Race volunteers were basically a biker gang, drinking beer the whole day
- No chip timing, even though it was promised
- No event timing at all. No clock. No stopwatches. Nothing at all.
- Run and bike were along a poorly marked highway. Had to cross traffic to get to aid stations
- No shirts or medals, even though they were promised
- No awards ceremony

All in all, the RD (Brent Kamenka) put just barely enough effort into the event to avoid being arrested for fraud. He's stopped answering his phone and email. Several racers are talking to their credit card companies to get refunds.

I'd have to say avoiding anything from triathlons.net and "World Endurance Sport" is probably a good idea. He's also using the race names "My First Triathlon", "Friendliest Triathlons", and "Bigfoot Triathlon."

OMG that sucks.

atleast there was a race per say but still. Man I thought my first HIM gave me troubles now I feel so much better.

Now I think about it is much better to have not even raced at all. HIM like that could be dangerous to your health not to mention your life.

Sounds like this guy got in over his head and just doesn't know how to plan a race but thanks for the heads up.   As far as fraud goes it really depends on his intent.  Did he plan to put on a good race and just could not get enough volunteers to help out and instead of cancelling the race just decided to do it anyways?  I really doubt people will be able to get there money back but you never know.

Did the volunteers offer to share their beer?

This guy has literally been banned from a number of municipalities. "My First Triathlon" is his specialty because targeting people unfamiliar with the sport is his best bet. Those familiar with triathlon in the U.S and Canada usually know to stay away from any race he's involved with.

I've heard ofthis before, I can't believe that someone could be this bad at race organization.

I can believe that he could be this bad once. ONCE!

But if people keep getting fished in by this dude, that is just unacceptable.

The city of Parksville loves him too,

MY FIRST/MY NEXT TRIATHLON ANNOUNCEMENT

As previously advised the "My First/ My Next Triathlon" event advertised to be held in Parksville during August 2007 has been denied by Council.

On June 25, 2007 the City obtained an Injunction Order from the Supreme Court of BC against Brent Kamenka, carrying on business as World Endurance Sport, ordering that the "Respondent is prohibited from holding the Triathlon scheduled for August 18, 2007; or any other event on any other date within the boundaries of the City of Parksville unless written permission has been obtained from the City of Parksville for such an event".

My first tri ever was a Brent Kamenka "My First Tri" in Galveston, Texas.  Similar problems - maybe not QUITE as bad as that, but certainly stuff nobody but a noob would put up with.   Not knowing what to expect, we had fun, but it wasn't safe at all.

The guy was banned from doing that race, which was taken over this year by one of the BEST RD's in the country - BT was even a sponsor!    Same weekend of the year, same island, but totally different race.

The bad versions of the Galveston race got extensive space on the houstonracing.com forums.  It's AMAZING this guy hasn't found a new line of work other than scamming triathletes.  I guess he makes a buck, moves on, repeats.

I thought those triathlon.net folks sounded familiar.  Can you believe these guys put on an Iron distance race?  Here's a warning post on that from someone at TNO...

Sounds downright dangerous.

Yup -- he was in Texas the year before he came to Washington. Same story there. Now he's apparently moved on to another part of the country and done the same thing. And next year I'm sure he'll pop up again somewhere else.

The guy is just soaking off a fairly well-to-do demographic. As I recall, for the Chelan event, he was taking registrations online the day before the event, even though it had already been canceled. Another RD stepped in at the last minute (BuDu Racing -- always puts on pretty high-qquality events, and I used to bike race with the guy) and a few other local organizations, and made the race happen, but the participants were rather surprised that their registration with Kamenka wasn't any good.

I'd love to see him participate in one of his own events...

Of course, I'd love to meet up with him in a dark alley too...

Let's hope that this scam artist is not providing a phony name next.  It's easy enough to change the business name.

Hmmmm, maybe an America's Most Wanted episode?

It seems like it would be a lot easier to make a lot more money with other types of fraud.

I agree. maybe he does many good races and we only hear about his failures. then again I would not know. Maybe he just cuts all the courners he can because he wants to make more of a profit.

Except this one I guess is legal where easier might not be. See easier is not always better.

I also find it a bit unsettling that the thread on the Seattle Tri club forum was locked. Scammers such as Kamenka should be outed very publicly...

I also wish he could explain issue's people have. We do not always know what is going on behind the scenes.

I also like that people can also express why they are upset and expose any lies the guy could be trying to spread.

Wow - I just about registered for this race a few months ago, but when I saw the race fees (and honestly, the neglected website) I decided against it. Glad I did! Thanks for the heads up!

Here's the houston thread:  http://www.houstonracing.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1118&b=... may need to be a member though.  Basically it's a blow-by-blow of the big fiasco of  WES  (World Endurance Sports) trying to pull together the 2006 race in Galveston - various branches of government saying the race hadn't been approved, etc.  Then just before race date it was taken over by another local RD.

Being somewhat of a tech nerd and self-taught web designer, I can tell you that whoever created the website http://www.triathlons.net was an idiot who didn't know anything about good design and layout... The home page and the other pages don't even remotely resemble one another...

Thank you for the warning ertman, I'll be sure to stay far away from these races!
