Subject: Tri Bike Fit...Online, in-store, questions...

Let's say I was looking to get fit for a tri-bike and wanted to do it right, and well.

Are there online shops that do as good a job as in-store?

Am I better off going to an in-store, FIST certified fitter?

I am in south-central PA, but could, theoretically, travel north to NYC (R&A?), south to Georgia (InsideOut) or west to Dearborn (BikeSport). Anybody have thoughts, recommendations, ideas about this sort of thing?

Any and all input, experiences, etc. are, of course, VERY much appreciated....

NO ONE can do an online fit. NO one. It has to be "hands-on".

Now with that part settled, then you need to find a good fitter. FIST is a good place to start. Any of the shops you mentioned would be great places.

In the Philly area, you could try Kewsick cycles or Cadence cycles. Brian at Keswick is certified in the Serotta (I think I spelled that right!) fit system. I was fit by him, and he's a really nice guy. Cadence is a little more of an up-scale store, and the fit will cost you more there, but might be worth it. Others might now of other good shops closer to you, but you could try one of those....

I haven't found the people at R&A to be very accomodating when it comes to fitting or otherwise working on bikes that they didn't sell themselves. I think you could do better in NYC.

Agree that an on-line fitting wouldn't work, but there are some "DIY" kits(bikefittingkit.com) that could probably do a passable job. Nothing beats a hands-on fit. Prices are going to vary significantly, depending on where you go. I spent $125, which was pretty inexpensive for NYC and got a hands-on 3-4 hour fitting, but with no computer-aided power testing or any of the high-tech bells and whistles. I also had places quote me $300 or more for a fitting, but since my bike only cost about $500, that didn't make a lot of sense (not that I could have afforded it anyway).

If you're buying a new bike, lots of places around here (including R&A and SBR Multisport) include the FIST fitting in the purchase price.

Isn't there a SBR Mutlisport in NYC?

Yep. As far as I know, that's the only one. The OP had mentioned travelling to NYC for his fitting and going to R&A, which is in Brooklyn, but I thought SBR might make more sense.

You could come to Trispeed in Hunt Valley, MD just off I-83 (about 12 miles north of Baltimore). They charge $75 for a full fitting without a bike purchase but I'm sure they would do a good job.

I was not as impressed by Cadence...a little snooty for me. I've been in a couple of times for small things and they seem to be bothered by my being in the shop. And, I was wearing a suit...adn looking for a bike. So it wasn't like I looked like I wasn't able to afford it...just a weird vibe there. I've not been to Keswick.

Thanks for the info, all. What's the difference between a FIST fitting and a Serrotta? I have done Serotta for a road bike, and it fits fine, but it seems to me I'd like to really dial in my tri-fit.

Yeh... I got the same vibe from Cadence. That's why I ended up going elsewhere....
