Fall Frenzy Triathlon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 09m 14s
Overall Rank = 23/535
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/56
Pre-race routine:

My wave wasn't supposed to start until 10:45, so Ken and I got to the race site at 9:00am. People were leaving transition with their stuff while we were setting up. Found a spot close to the bike in/out.
Event warmup:

Ran around the parking lot for a few minutes, but nothing special here. I didn't bring my HRM for this race. I figured it's going to be near LT for the whole race, so I didn't bother wearing it. And it was........
Swim
  • 08m 35s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Found 4 other people with the same projected times. One lady behind me kept touching my toes, so I let her pass me. Otherwise a good swim for me. I got out of the pool at 8.11. I struggled through the final 100 with my breathing. My heart rate shot up after the first 100 and stayed there until I finished the race.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to keep swimming. I shaved close to 2m off of last year's time. Without some serious personal coaching, I think I've reached my limit in terms of improvement.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Long run from the pool to T1. I didn't go all out in either transition, so I lost a little time here.
Bike
  • 35m 11s
  • 13 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't feel strong at all on this bike. I struggled up the hills, and did more resting on the downhills where I should have been hammering it. I managed to shave about 15" off of last years time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

nothing special. Again, I could have rushed it a little more and saved a few seconds.
Run
  • 22m 20s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was a struggle. I wanted to stop. I could feel my heart pounding, and tried to lower it by slowing down a little. At the turnaround, I picked up the pace, and pushed it all the way to the finish. Not my best, still working on that. I took off about a minute from last year.
Post race
Warm down:

I met my wife and kids at the finish. Talked to some BT'ers and waited for the results. My first podium, as I took 3rd in my age group.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Total time on my watch was 1:09.15 (roughly 2' better than last year), good for 3rd in my age group. It helped to have a guy in the 35-39 get top 3 overall. The race stats list me as 5th, but the 4th place guy is missing his T1 time, so I should be ahead of him.

I've been in a funk since the 5430 Long Course. I've trained but with no purpose, and my eating habits have sucked big time. I raced 4-5lbs heavier than the HIM. Plus, I think I am coming down with my kid's cold. So, I guess I can't complain with today's race. But that all changes tomorrow, as I start a 9 week program to get ready for the Silverman HIM and I may throw in the Denver Half marathon as a warm-up, so to speak.

Great job on the podium finish!  I'll take my 9 second victory over you since you've beat me all year.  Even though I'm not doing Silverman I'll still do some training with you.  Let me know when you need some company.  BTW.... that also qualifies you for Nationals Tongue out
