Subject: Best 2 Oly's in the Midwest?
I'm planning to compete in two Olympic distance triathlons next year. I live in Chicago and would prefer not to have to drive more than 6-8 hours. I want to do one before Memorial day and one after Labor day. Any suggestions? Is anyone doing the Music City Tri? Any Oly's before Memorial day?

I would have to guess that many in the midwest pick the late August Accenture in Chicago as one of the premier oly events.
I have no experience, but I would target that as a big midwest one to do.

I am interested in this thread as well.

Indiana really seems lacking in Oly distance Tri's. It looks like Michigan and Ohio have quite a bit more.

Thought few really seem to be as early as you are looking for (for your first one).

Pokagon (Angola, Indiana).  This is in the northeast corner of the state.  It was in May last year...May 19th maybe.  This year was their first year at this location.  1 mile swim (was COLD), 25 bike, 6.2 trail run.  Pretty surroundings.

Hosted by the Tri-Fort (Ft Wayne Tri Club).

Accenture would be good if you really, really, r.e.a.l.l.y, like crowds (8000 participants in three distances).

I did Dutchman (Pella, Iowa) in 2006 and Evergreen (Bloomington, IL) this year.  Both are worth doing.  I haven't done Iron Abe (Springfield, IL) and there are a lot in Wisconsin.

Lifetime Fitness is definately a premier event, again if you like crowds. Last year they had 1,100 in the Oly alone, not to mention the Sprint (which was larger) and the Relay divisions.

As for a Minnesota Oly that is done very, very nicely, the Timberman in Grand Rapids, MN, early July. Very nice setting in the northwoods, and it attracts top-notch talent (the guy who placed 6th in Escape from Alcatraz won it last year). It only gets 130 but it is a high quality race.

Tuxedo Brothers put on a few good tri's in Indiana.  I'll look them up and see what I can find.

ETA:

Here's what I found:  Mid-May Pokagon State Park in ANgola
Muncie Endurathon
Niles, MI Optimist Tri
Purdue Boilerman Tri

These are all Olys and are before Memorial Day and after Labor day, I think!

Memphis in May is a great event that takes place before Memorial Day. That's about 8 hours from Chicago. I'm planning on doing that one again next Spring.

For me, Chicago Accenture is worth doing once, but it's too big and too much of a hassle for an out-of-towner to do easily.

Pleasant Prairie (WI) is a nice if you're looking for flat and fast. It's very well run and has "the best goodie bag in the Midwest"-- last year that was a GREAT tri bag, this year it was an OK cycling jersey.

Oshkosh (WI) also offers an Oly. That one's also flat and fast and a great place to set a new PR.

For me, Pleasant Prairie is probably the pick of the litter, although I love Memphis, too (mainly because it takes place the same weekend as the Barbecue World Championship!)

I did Chicago this year and loved it.  Just have the right attitude - don't expect 8000 people to get out of your way.

I also did a smaller Oly (~250 peeps) in Hopkins, MI (between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids ~ 4hrs form Chicago) callled Johan's Trifest in early June.  The swag was minimal: plain cotton tee, no medal, no on-site photographer.  I'd call this a racer's race, as the organization, course, post race grub, volunteers (you know the important stuff) were all top shelf.  The bike was pretty hilly for a midwest race; challenging and fun.  Also, some wicked fast times for a small race.  Like I said, a "racer's race."

I know a couple of people from my area that did the inagural Pokagon Tri and liked it a lot.  Angola, IN would be about 3.5hours from Chi-town.  Feedback was that the run (mostly trail) is very challenging and not to expect a PR for the 10k.  It is before Memorial Day.  I hope to do this one next year.

A lot of folks in the area here do the Niles Triathlon in early September.  I don't know much about it, but it's been around awhile.  So that says something, right?

I've got family in Nashville.  So Music City is also on my radar for 2008.

Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like I've got some good options. I've done the Lake Geneva two years now and the Galena once. I wish Galena had an Oly. The Pokagon sounds interesting. Did they require wet suits?

I would second Hy-Vee in Iowa amazing race in the morning then get to watch the pros when you finish and next year they will be basnig a member of the olympic team as well as other countries observing for their own. So it should be a very interesting race.

I agree on the Door County Tri. It was a really fun event.

I got the word from the RD that there will likely be NO Oly distance next year. Just Sprint and Half Ironman.

I did the Sprint this year, and it was great. I was hoping to do the Olympic next year. Not so sure about a HIM yet!

Memphis in May is a great event. They have a sprint Mtn Bike on Saturday and the the Oly on Sunday. Signing up for both puts you in the "Amature Challenge" Great weekend for racing and BBQ!

I was a spectator at the Lifetime fitness tri in Minneapolis this year and it was very exciting! I will be doing the oly distance this year.
