Pre-race routine:

My routine is to check and recheck all my things about twenty times and then still mumble about it on the way. We drove from Sagemont, I45S and Beltway 8, this morning. It's about a 45 minute drive. We should have left the house by 4:45 but didn't get on the road until 5:15 am. I was nervous about getting to the site and not being late. It wasn't looking good when we got to the area but there were a lot of cars with bikes in the same crawling traffic as we were. We decided to drop me and my bike for me to go ahead, hubby would work out the parking on his own.

I tried to eat a peanut butter sandwich on the way but I only managed about a 1/2 or so. I was too nervous as always.
Event warmup:

No warmup, just set up and waiting in lines for my chip and the bathroom.
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a very crowded wave and it never really cleared out. We swam in a small lake so not much room at all. I managed to draft for a little bit in two different sections but it didn't last long. Breast stroked entirely too much to catch my breath and try to get my heart rate down. Not too bad for the amount of swimming I have been doing lately
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

I was so out of breath from the swim, I took time to slow down in T1. Too much time, but I needed it. I had a bit of trouble getting my bike shoes on with wet feet.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 55s
  • 19 miles
  • 18.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy on the bike. I was able to pass and then stay ahead. I also tried to stay with a group since there was a lot of car traffic as well. I should have drank more while riding and eat a little more too. Overall not bad. Getting better.
What would you do differently?:

Ride outside more often.
Transition 2
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

My legs were spent when I arrived for dismounting and almost couldn't get my leg over the bike! I knew I was in trouble for the run at this moment. I managed to trot with the bike back to the rack but again, took my time here to stretch and grab another clif shot or two with water before heading out.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep moving.
Run
  • 36m 4s
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Painful and slow. I walked too much and I didn't push myself really hard to keep at it. I am surprised that I managed a 12 minute pace! Tough.
What would you do differently?:

Run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with hubby, stretched, drank some water. I was not able to eat, so we skipped that area. In general, I just kept moving and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistant training and an extra 10 lbs!

Event comments:

I have enjoyed this race two years in a row. It seemed a bit more hectic this time over last year, but still well put together. I will do this one again.
