Overall Rank = 49/97

Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

we stayed at the hotel that was hosting the race, so we got to sleep in a little! i went down and set up my transition area then went back up and showered and ate.
Event warmup:

i didn't do much of a warm up. it was freezing out and the swim start was quite a distance from the transition area. i jogged to the swim start just because my feet were going numb on the concrete!
Swim
  • 13m 59s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

i came out pretty fast and even got a few strokes in per breath. then i started thinking about it, freaked a little, and started breathing every stroke. i had no problems with sighting, but i did have a problem with a meandering swimmer. i gulped a mouthful of water towards the end and needed to stop and choke for a second!
What would you do differently?:

probably do better at getting away from other swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

i don't know why this transition took so long. my wetsuit came off pretty easily and i got my shoes on without a problem. i struggled with my shirt a little and when i put on my glasses there was condensation all over them, which i had to clean off. i ate a little gu and drank some water.
What would you do differently?:

move faster!!
Bike
  • 28m 16s
  • 7.5 miles
  • 15.92 mile/hr
Comments:

this bike course was not too bad except for the half a mile of torn up, bumpy, ridged road and the speed bumps! at one point i thought i would be better off with a mountain bike! on the first loop i slowed down too much for the speed bumps and on the second loop i just barrelled over them. overall, i felt good on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

not slow down so much for the speed bumps.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

no problems here. i took a drink and was off and running, only to realize that i forgot my race number. luckily i hadn't made it too far.
What would you do differently?:

put that damn number on.
Run
  • 22m 19s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

i drank some gatorade at the beginning of the run and felt great throughout the run. i didn't walk once!! i saw a 32 year old in the distance and decided that i needed to pass her, so i did. then i made sure there was lots of distance between us so she didn't pass me at the finish!
What would you do differently?:

push even harder!
Post race
Warm down:

i walked around and ate a few bites of banana. i knew there was a casino buffet in my future, so i saved room!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the speed bumps and crappy road conditions.

Event comments:

this was a small race, so there was not a lot of fanfare after the race and there were no massages.

naturally, i had fun at this race because i did well. it definitely boosted my spirits in light of my performance in my last race!

Course: we did two loops around the resort. there were a few hills, but nothing too ominous. part of the resort (and the course) ran through an rv park and there were at least five significant speed bumps on the course. in addition to that, there was an extremely poor patch of road with potholes, ridges and generally uneven road. the bad road was on one of the uphills (of course)!
