I love pizza and make my own at least once a week to get a greater nutritional value. However I am can't make a great crust. I have used box mixes and our breadmaker on the dough setting. I have looked online and everybody thinks they have the best and I always get the same results. How can I get the restaurant style pizza crust without going there?

If there is a Trader Joe's or a Sprouts near you (or any whole food store) they sell a really good whole wheat pizza crest dough. My wife and I buy them a few at a time and we keep them in the freezer. Check it out!

i make a homemade pizza crust with a recipie i got out of my betty crocker cookbook. I use wheat flour instead of regular. it never turns out like the store kind or the pizza guy kind. i try adding seasoning to it and sometimes coat it with a bit of melted butter--that seems to help. it's still a work in progress.

from what i've found, it's almost impossible to make it taste like the the "real" thing.

Bread machine recipe for the dough cycle:

  1. 1 cup water
  2. 1 beaten egg
  3. 1 teaspoon salt
  4. 2 tablespoons sugar
  5. 3 cups bread flour (sometimes I use 1c whole wheat + 2c bread flour for a change)
  6. 3 tablespoons dry milk powder
  7. 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

As far as the actual dough is concerned, having an egg in there really helps the texture.

NOW HERE IS THE TRICK:  when you roll the dough out on the counter, use corn meal (and a goodly amount of it) to dust the counter instead of more flour.  Tastes just like crust from Domino's if that's what you are kind of aiming for.

Enjoy!

You might try cooking it on a pizza stone.

You could also buy dough from your local pizza place. Most of them will sell just the dough. You can also buy pizza dough in the freezer section of the supermarket but as someone else posted, it also depends on rolling it out with cornmeal and baking it on a preheated pizza stone in a hot oven.

Good luck.

I made a homemade WW crust last night and dumped a bunch of garlic powder in the dough when I added the yeast.  Not sure if it is was the garlic, but the crust didn't really rise, but tasted great.

My recipe was very simple - whole wheat, yeast, and water (oh yeah - and garlic).

I do something unusual that seems to be a hit with the wife and anyone else that tries it. I just build my pizza on an extra large flour tortilla.

Crank the oven to 450 to 500 and heat up a pizza stone for 20 minutes. I top the tortilla with bbq sauce, chicken, and mixed cheese for one style, or pizza sauce and your other favorite toppings. Cook for 5 minutes and cool on a cooling rack.

I love a thin/crisp crust pizza (St. Louis style), so it works great for me. The only thing, you can't overload the toppings.

I also like using a whole wheat pita bread as the crust and just throw the ingredients on it. It's a quick, easy and healthy way to make an individual pizza.

also if you dont have time to make the dough, local pizza places sell the dough and you can make your own pizza, and some places even have whole wheat dough.

Just a little FYI.

thanks

my wife also makes a mean pizza dough in our breadmaker. She has incorporated flaxseed into the crust. It's delicious.

Pizza sauce always seems to taste best in the summer with fresh tomatoes though.

I use whole wheat panini bread, topped with a little bit of flavoured olive oil. Then I top with veggies, a bit of goat cheese, toast, and I get amazing results (and compliments!).
