Comments: I started off in the front and hung with a few younger guys. Pace felt a little hot but it was a 5k and my coach told me to race this to see where we're at. I passed the 1 mile mark and heard the volunteer yell out 5:45! Uh oh!! That was definitely too hot! Tried to back down a bit but looked at my HR and I was in the 180's! I thought "What the hell, let's see how long this lasts!" Here comes the hill for the first time. That hurt a little bit but it was manageable, I know it's going to hurt next time!! I went past the start line and grabbed some water to wet my mouth and spit. I felt pretty good going down Main Street and checked my HR.....183! 2nd mile mark I heard 12:15, that was a little better but my hr was still in the mid 180's. I really am starting to feel my legs turn into spaghetti during the 3rd mile and I have to go up that hill again!! Damn!! I got to the top of the hill and had nothing left. The 2 guys I passed that mile passed me back and I was panting like a dog! This 5K stuff HURTS!!!!! I got back to Main Street and turned the corner to the finish line and saw 19:58 but I still had about 50 yds to run! Oh well! I definitely had nothing left!! What would you do differently?: Pace the first mile better to have a stronger finish. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit. Had some fruit and water. Talked to a few friends and ran 2 miles to my grandmas birthday party! She is 90!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: Eating like a horse the past few weeks and carrying some extra pounds!! Last updated: 2007-10-21 12:00 AM

The morning was a crazy one between getting to church with the kids, barn chores, house chores, getting ready for grandmas birthday, checking on MIL in hospital, etc. I wasn't sure if I was going to race this one at all. I did manage to eat a PB&J sandwich with granola about 3 hrs before the race just in case I did make it. I also was forcing myself to drink water as well to be sure I was hydrated.
Drive Matt to my mom's house and ran 2 miles to the race start. Nice easy run with a 7 min pace 1/2 mile for a pick-up. Legs felt pretty good but I wasn't expecting much for the race. It was only my 2nd 5K I had ever run without a biking leg before it.
