Pre-race routine:

Up at 7:00 AM, woke sleepy head....eerrr Trigirl10 up, since she was getting some volunteer points for next year's running club grand prix.

Got dressed grabbed a banana, clif bar and a cherry turnover. Headed out the door and down to the race site. I was on the road about 3-5 minutes when the rain started coming down. So I turned around and headed home to get Trigirl10 some rain gear.

Picked that up, headed back out on the road. Got signed up for the race talked with some people. Changed into my running shoes, and took off my sweats.
Event warmup:

Shivered in the chilly air, stood around for 5 minutes before the race started and talked some more. I figured it was a 9.3 mile race, I didn't need to warm up much more.

Comments:

Maybe this time it should be keeping warm - not cool. With temps in the 39 range and generally drizzle, it was damp and chilly. I was fine while I ran, but the first 5-8 minutes were a little cool.

I started out running with a local triathlete that is training for the olympic race walking team. She was race walking this race, and I was able to hang with her for the first 4 miles. After that I gave up and let her go. I have planned on trying to run slower, 1:30 overall, but I was pretty happy with this race.

At the 10K mark I think I was at 55:30 so that is a PR for that distance. (Although I might have been faster at the half Mary at that point, I am not sure.)

I could tell I struggled the last 5K, I was feeling just a little tired. I had a gel, and should have taken it, but elected to skip it.

Mentally this was a pretty good run, although I had started the day with upper back pain, and had considered skipping the race this time. I enjoyed running with someone I knew for the first 4 miles, and would have tried to hang in there, but I could tell I was not going to hold the pace. When I hit the turn around I was at position 104, and I finished in 107. So I had net 3 people pass me on the second half. I passed 2-4 myself, but I don't recall how many.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for longer distances.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to the sign up area, got my keys, and got changed into dry and warm clothes. Grabbed a water and also a bagel. Hung around a couple of minutes, while they presented the awards. Then took off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not running this distance enough, starting out too fast.

Nice race on a cool day!  PR'ing the 10 k again.  Keep it up, these longer distances will help your shorter stuff!

That is cool how many races you get to do!

Nice race.  I appreciate how aware you are of your strategy, what is happening, and how you are doing.  I tend to just go with the flow and really need to learn to be more disciplined mentally when I race.

Cool that you started out with a race walker!
