Overcast
Total Time = 5h 18m 30s
Overall Rank = 11/33
Age Group = 41-45
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Just prepped my stuff. Got my food bags laid out and the drinks prepped with the electrolyte replacement stuff, Nuun, at least that's what i think it is.
Event warmup:

None.
Run
  • 5h 18m 30s
  • 29 miles
  • 10m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Can't say that I ever hit the 'wall' as such, just kept getting slower and slower.

L1 - Was running with a hand held bottle and in the middle of the lap decided that my biceps were working way to hard carrying it, so I switched to my butt pack for the remainder of the race. Never try anything new on race day!
Also began running with my trail shoes and switched to my road shoes at the end of L1. Felt a hot spot/blister forming on the outside of my big toe and didn't want to have to worry about it later in the race.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more earlier. I brought lots of bars and gels, and I started eating in the middle of lap 1, but I just couldn't eat more than a bite or two every lap. By the third lap I was forcing myself to take bites and was trying to take gels about every half hour. I still only ate 1 bar the whole race(300 cals), and used 6 gels by the middle of the 4th lap. So my nutrition couldn't have been too bad, though I was having random spastic muscle cramps, usually when i was stepping down or starting to stride too long. As long as I slowed down immediately and walked for a couple of seconds I was ok to continue.

Water consumption was low also, basically a 16oz bottle of powerade/nuun every lap. NOT ENOUGH!
Post race
Warm down:

Sat around. Showered. Ate a burger(that i couldn't finish)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Spastic cramping on the final loop and just plain tired.

Event comments:

This was my first 'official' marathon/ultra distance event.

11th out of 33 Starters.
7th out of 13 Men.
1st of 2 in AG.

Wow - Wow - Wow!  I am so proud of you!

What an amazing pace for this distance!!!

Not sure what else to add except that I truly admire your athleticism and this accomplishment is a jewel in your crown.

Can't believe you did a recovery run the next day...I think I'd still be in bed.

...well done, my friend!
