Subject: Boston Qualifying Time Question

I am planning my 2008 schedule including time goals and had a question about re-qualifying for the Boston marathon.  I will run Boston this year 3 days before my 45th birthday.  What time would I need to qualify for the following year?  I originally thought 3:50, but someone told me that since I am moving into a different age bracket (45-49) that I really need a 4:00.  He said it is the age you are when you are supposed to run the next Boston marathon that sets the BQ.  Is that correct?

Thanks.

Suzy

Your qualifying time reflects the age you will be when you run the race.  If your b-day is 3 days later, then you'll need to have a BQ time of the 40 - 44 group ........ so a 3:50:59 or better.  They don't follow the same age gradings as USAT (where you are the age of whatever you turn that year all year long).

You've run a 3:40, so should have no problem!!

In theory you are correct, assuming my training is stellar and the weather is reasonable.  I was hoping to give myself plenty of wiggle room so my winter training plans were not mainly focused on running.  Some of us have a long way to go to get better at biking.

I'm old, I need all the help I can get!

How long is a Boston Qualifying time good for? IE if I run a marathon in Oct or Nov 2008 would the time still be good for qualifying purposes for Boston 2010?

I think it's like 18 months.

Depends on the race, but in many cases it will be good.  My qualifier from last November was good for '07 and '08.  I don't think my Baltimore time from last month is good for '09, but it might be.

Check the race info. from the one you are trying to qualify at to see when they are still valid.  As Bryan said, the rule of thumb is about 18 months.

If you run Boston 2008 at 44 years 362 days old, the time that you needed to qualify for the 2008 race was a 3:50 (since you will run Boston 2008 at age 44).

However, to requalify for 2009 you will only need to run a 4:00:59. You will be 45 years old when you run Boston in the spring of 2009.

The cut-off date for qualifying is around September 25th.  So a qualifying time done after Sept 25, 2007  (or whatever the date is- it's on the website) is good for the 2008 and 2009 Boston Marathon, while a qualifying time achieved in say August, 2007 is only good for the 2008 Boston Marathon.
