Hemet, California
United States
45F / 7C
Total Time = 1h 15m 38s
Overall Rank = 394/721
Age Group = F25-29
Age Group Rank = 10/35
Pre-race routine:

On the way to Hemet, I hit a piece of plywood on the freeway with my car, it destroyed my radiator, so I had to deal with the resulting madness. Got to Hemet late in the evening, met my sister, checked in, had a late dinner, went to bed a little later than I would have liked. Started the morning with coffee, a bottle of gatorade, and 1.5 clif bars.
Event warmup:

I got there early, stood around with my family for awhile, then about 20 minutes before race time I went for a short 5-minute jog and did a little bit of stretching.

This was a reverse tri, so the swim was last, and it was in a pool. The pool was divided into 3 big lanes, the swim started at the end of the first lane, then you swim under the lane line and come back down the second lane, then back down the 3rd lane and out. There were a lot of people doing breast stroke and generally flailing, it was very crowded and choppy, and I got kicked a lot. In the middle 50, the lane was really big so I was able to swim around the huge crowd of people.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the swim was so short and my speed was limited by the number of people.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s

Took off running shoes, put on bike shoes, helmet, and gloves, downed some gatorade, and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

  • 39m 31s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.22 mile/hr

This was my favorite part of the race. I felt really good and passed a lot of people. Great fun!
What would you do differently?:

I don't have a lot of experience riding on flat terrain and was a little too conservative. I could have pushed harder, especially since the run was already behind me. I had a half-full bottle on the bike and should have taken a drink from it instead of wasting time doing this in T2.
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s

Took off helmet, glasses, gloves, shoes, put goggles on my head, put on flip-flops, chugged some gatorade, and ran to the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the gatorade. I was thirsty after not drinking on the bike, but it was kind of a waste of time since I only had 150m of swimming ahead of me and I ended up swallowing a bunch of water in the pool anyway.
  • 28m 13s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile

I paced myself well and was happy with my time. There was a water station about halfway through.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and tracked down my flip-flops, had a quarter bagel and half of an apple, took some pictures with the family, air-dried, then got cold about 20 minutes after the race and went to the car to put some real clothes on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first tri and I simply need to train more to get better.

Event comments:

A good first experience. My only complaint is that I had to time my splits myself, since there were no chips. I had a lot of fun and am now hopelessly addicted.
