  • Comments: Only ran 20 miles once in my training. I started really focusing on running shortly after El Tour de Tucson. My half marathon in Vegas was a bit of a mess (ran a 2:03 with an avg HR of 184) so I decided to actually find a follow a training plan for once in my life. I actually followed it very closely, missing only two days. One 20 mile run turned into an 18 mile run, but otherwise I was very dedicated. My wife was super supportive of the training plan and that made all the difference.

  • Comments: Competitor Group puts on a great Rock n Roll series, and of the 3 I have raced (AZ, San Diego, Las Vegas), I think AZ is the most organized and spectator friendly.

  • Comments: I was really close to only doing the half due to some training challenges and the fact that for some reason I thought the race was at the end of January. I posted a thread ( http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... ) in here asking for advice and got some really good input. I wasn't going to do another one of these originally, but I'm signing up for next year's event with a better training approach and idea of what it takes. This was a great first experience and I recommend it to anyone looking to do a good novice course.

  • Comments: Only complaint - start on time! I know traffic in Tempe got bad, but athletes need to be prepared for that and leave earlier. Yes, if it means you are at the start 30 minutes earlier than you want, tough beans. I only hope the race director makes a point to tell people that they need to be parked no later than 2hrs before the race start. That being said - I liked the fact that they had the extra "early" Gu station at mile 7-8. In years past they have not done this, and it was more than welcomed (I carry enough but it replenishes what I use). Also, the Jamba Juice at the finish was awesome and very much appreciated. Thanks to to all the volunteers, cheering squads, bands and spectators that make this a great race year-in and year-out. The new course had different challenges, and it will be fun to get used to it as well as I was used to the previous route.

  • Comments: B52's in concert after the race. cool! Overall a very well run event. The only annoyance was that it started 1/2 hour late. Gave me a chance to hit that VIP Porta Potty one more time tho'.

  • Comments: The rock and roll deal where they have bands along the course is pretty much a useless gimmick. The athletes could hear each band for 30 to 60 seconds as we run past, so I supposed the bands are more for the spectators. The expo was pretty big, and there was a concert, so that would have been cool, but we were more interested in seeing more of Arizona outside of Phoenix, so we didn't stay around for the race related stuff. As far as the course and race day, it doesn't get flatter or better weather than here. The race start and end were set up well and since I had someone to pick me up and drop me off it was really easy for me. It probably would have been more annoying if I had to use the shuttles and worry about parking. Although there were plenty of water stops, they only had one place where they provided Gus and that was at mile 19. I had to carry 5 Gus in my pockets to have enough. The on course energy drink was Cytomax, which I did not take since I never trained with it. I wish

  • Comments: I'd definitely do this race again, that is, if I actually wanted to do another marathon. I told everyone this would be the last one for a while. I just can't handle all the constant running and the time commitment.

  • Comments: Elite racing does an amazing job organizing. The corrals make sense, the cheerleaders make a difference, the reunion area make it easy to find loved ones after the race, the food is plentiful and appropriate (I once ran a race where they had snickers and donuts at the end!). Really enjoyed this race but a marathon is no joke!

  • Comments: Could have had better selections of food post race!. I got yelled at for sitting on big bags of ice in the recovery area. Who puts mountains of ice bags at the end of a marathon and doesn't expect somebody to sit on them...

  • Comments: Great race, lots of volunteers, nice flat course. I just don't know if I'd do another January marathon because of Colorado weather and training in the snow. I would suggest they not have the packet pickup/expo in downtown Phoenix. The $30 parking fees close to the expo were beyond ridiculous, and I felt like I was driving in NYC with the gridlocked traffic.

  • Comments: Overall, I have to be happy that I completed my first marathon. However, my average pace has been about 8:30 regardless of distance. I did 1:53 in the HM last year and really should have been able to run sub 4 hours with proper training.

  • Comments: The volunteers were very attentive. They assessed my situation and made sure I was able to walk / get back to my car. I met a lot of nice and friendly people! It was my first trip to Phoenix and I enjoyed it.
