  • Comments: This is a great venue and a great race. I loved the individual numbers on the bike racks. This is a great place to try a first half iron. I had no idea what to expect - thrilled with a 5:17 for my first one.

  • Comments: Setup always puts on a great race. Not sure that I have any desire to come back to White Lake anytime soon though. It's a great race atmosphere and overall I enjoyed the race but I'm almost done with long course races. Maybe they will resurface the roads in a few years and give it another shot.

  • Comments: The race lived up to its reputation as a "heat fest". Was hoping to do better but as this was my first HIM distance race I can't complain.

  • Comments: Race delayed 40 minutes due to fog on lake. Well organized but HS volunteers had no idea what to do. I had an average race and tried to hold back bike pace was again too hot on the run. Ended up on a 5 min run and 1 min walk pace. Water and ice sponges every mile was much appreciated. Rain and lightning started just after I finished so didn't stick around long.

  • Comments: The only negative thing I have to say about this race is the quality of the bike course. The roads really were not great, and although they were flat, the uneven pavement made things difficult. Also, there was only one porta potty on the bike course, which I thought was strange. I thought the volunteers were really good, especially on the run course. I only had one issue getting sponges, and that was when a 13 year old girl volunteer manning the sponge station was flirting with at least a 16 year old kid working water. I was pretty firm with her that I needed sponges now. Let's be honest - someone needed to intervene.

  • Comments: Great race. It's just so unfortunate that both weekends were so hot. It's interesting that the average temps for that time of year really are in the 70's. You just never know. That's the hard thing about these early season races. You spend months of training trying to stay warm outside, and then race day comes, and you can't stay cool enough. This was a great experience and even though I said never again as I waited for the times to be posted, the next morning I was wondering what I'm going to do next. I definitely forsee another half at some point. I really do like the distance. And thank you to everyone that supported me over the past 4 months. The people you surround yourself with can make or break you. And all of you made me a half ironman.

  • Comments: I will not do this course again. If you like the heat and are fast on the flats, this is the race for you. The lake was beautiful but not enough to make me go through the heat of this course. I heard it called "White Bake", they weren't kidding. The recycled ice towels were pretty nasty. At one station the young volunteers had started to fill the drinking cups with towel water. NASTY! I am sorry that I spent 6 months training to race in these conditions and still am left wondering what I could do if it had been cooler. In the end I did complete a 70.3. I am proud of that.

  • Comments: Learned a hard lesson to think hard through nutrition before the race and make sure I don't forget anything. I strongly believe that I could have met my goals had I not gotten behind on my salts. It wasn't my strongest day.

  • Comments: Overall, 6th in AG in swim, 19th on bike and 15th on the run for a 12th/54. Last year I was 8th/64 I think but this is a comparable performance. I am pretty disappointed because I was hoping for a good race, rather than being slower in every event (OK, conditions were worse but it is still disappointing). And then killing my bike on the garage roof when I got home really made it into an unpleasant day. Plan for the rest of the season is to just do sprints and maybe an OLY. I enjoy the training and racing, but didn't enjoy this race or being away from the family on many sunday mornings. I'll try do shorter, faster stuff for now and re-evaluate as I move forward. What to do about my bike though!!

  • Comments: Good race for first time HIM'ers but choose the first weekend to improve chances of cooler temps. 372 men, 700 total participants

  • Comments: I thought the run course sucked. the surface was a slanted road shoulder which eventually began to tweak my knee on the way back. No shade sucked too.At least there was an aid station every mile. The whole recycling used towels in the chill coolers is just gross. I recommend keep your 1st towel and use it the whole race. Food selection out on the course was great! Overall this course was a tough one. Being my 1st Half I'm not surprised.

  • Comments: This was a great training day for me. It showed me my weaknesses and was a great race to guage what I need to work on this summer. Running is definately my strongest discipline and I am a 'middle of the packer' when it comes to swimming and biking. From this I have learned that this year I need to focus on my swim and bike. Great race though...I hope to do again next year and break 6 hours!

  • Comments: Good venue, not too crowded and lots of on course support throughout. Temps can swing from cold to hot this time of year but overall, should be just right. Good size for early racing and easy to access from most parts of North and South Carolina.

  • Comments: I was rather disappointed with the post race activities (as compared to B2B Half). The medical personell were also a little incompetent and didn't know what to do with anything they had. I had to go to Elizebethtown's Urgent Care Center to get any kind of help and it took an hour for them to finish. They also had no energy drinks, just Pepsi and Mtn. Dew. However, the lake and the scenery are absolutely GORGEOUS and the bike/run courses are THE FLATTEST that I have ever seen anywhere!!!!!!! It's like TT heaven!!!! Bottom line: don't wreck, get sunstroke, or any other kind of ailment at this Half and you should enjoy it!!

  • Comments: Solidly organized race overall. More skilled volunteers on run course would have been nice, but I just appreciate having them well-stoked more than anything else. Set-up does good work
