  • Comments: Very well organized from start to finish. Lots of schwagg at expo and in race packet. Good volunteer support too. Finish was kind of uneventful. Finisher's medal handed to me with not so much of a word. No finisher's photo, no direction to food, shuttles, or anything for that matter. Didn't know what to do except leave. Everything was great up until just after finishing.

  • Comments: I love the HyVee Triathlon. It was the first race I ever did, so it will always be special. The organization of the race is top-notch, and the volunteers are outstanding. Despite the T1 catastrophe, I did set a PR, and would have been probably 3 minutes faster without it. After having fully recovered from my OCD/microfracture 2 years ago, I am faster now than before my injury, which makes me happy. I think I can still get faster, though. I think 2:25 is within reach for next year.

  • Comments: this was an amazing well organized and enjoyable triathlon. lots of swag, very well laid out course: in the water, on the bike and on the run. the transition area is too big!! but i do not think this could be avoided given the number participants. fantastic volunteers and staff!! warm encouraging atmosphere. i do have one major complaint that does not only apply to this triathlon, but to almost all that i participate in. in this case, when i finished after being on the course for about four and a half hours, i was excited to see the massage canopy and see several triathletes on tables getting treated. when i went to the sign up desk there was a sheet of paper that noted that the massage area was now closed and they were not taking anymore people. initially, i was angry because this kind of discrimination happens in one way or another at almost every triathlon that i have participated in. those who are slower triathlete and finish near the end of the race do not get the same

  • Comments: My only complaint about the whole event was they had the finish downtown at the pro finishline which was very cool, but it made it very challenging for my family to get from transition to downtown in time to see us finished. My wife didn't get to see me finish. :( I absolutely loved that we got to finish in the pro area, but logistically it stunk for my wife and kids. Also, they had a bus that took athletes from the finish line back to transition but because the roads were still blocked off they dropped us off on the other side of the lake from transition. we had to walk/run 1.5 miles from the bus dropoff back to transition. That wasn't fun an hour after you finish.

  • Comments: The post race stuff not being great was pretty much because of the weather. Still got to eat and load up on bags of freebies though. You couldn't possibly throw a stick without hitting a stick or volunteer, at least back at the site. Well done in spite of the water above and below. I was looking forward to an Oly, but given my late arrival and my knee pain later I think it worked out in my favor that this became a spring.

  • Comments: this race report will be pretty much worthless to all in the future since it wasn't the full race. for what is was worth, this was the biggest race i've ever been to. i was a little overwhelmed, but for the most part, i thought it was run very well. if you've got the extra cash lying around, it's a nice race.

  • Comments: Look - I kind of dog the race organization in thsi ranking, but not due to effort. They were really up against it and were not able to communicate with the whole group what to do. there were some issues with bike security at the end and there were some issues with the course, but they changed everything on the fly. IMO, they should have changed this either the night before or first thing in the AM, but they discussed it for too long instead of just making a decision. I feel for them and have no ill will about it.

  • Comments: The event coordinators did the best they could with what mother nature handed them. The distances for the swim and bike may have been off a bit (long in both cases), but what can you expect with 30 minutes to change the course and get the race off on time. I'll be looking forward to racing this again, at its intended Olympic distance.

  • Comments: Hy-Vee puts on a huge event. I think that they did the best that they could possibly due given the weather situation. There were tons of vendors, lots of food, and lots of other give aways. My family left with a huge bag full of free stuff. Not to mention the backpack 'o swag for the athletes. There was a bit of a bottle neck getting over the bridges that went over the run out, probably wouldn't have been as bad if everyone wasn't scrambling to get out of there to avoid the storm.

  • Comments: I continue to love this race! Certainly I wish we could have raced the whole thing but half a tri is better than no tri. I hope to continue to be back for this one next year and in the years to come.

  • Comments: I don't have too much to compare this to but it was fun being a part of a big event. It was interesting going to the swim practices the week before the race and seeing the pro athletes out there doing the same thing. I'm looking forward to coming back again next year and shattering my time. Defintion of "shatter" is TBD.

  • Comments: This race was well run given that there were like 2000 competitors were involved when including the 200 some relays. Good shwag gifts. Very good post race food. I had two ice cream cookie sandwiches, a granola bar, a mini cupcake, two bananas, 20 oz of Gatorade, and 20 oz. of water. I should have gone for the post race massage since I am still very sore the day after. I do have two major complaints though. We had to wait in an extremely long line to be able to get into transition after the race to get our stuff out. This could have been handled much better. Also, the buses to get out of the race venue were set up horribly. They were not pulling up to the designated spot and picking up people from the front of the line. They were stopping way short so people near the end were just jumping on. This only affected the buses going to the mall, not the ones going to the high schools. I and many others just rode our bikes back. I didn't know the route back, but there were plenty of

  • Comments: This is just an awesome race. Hy-Vee continues to improve each year which is amazing considering how well the race is already. I just wish that this wouldn't be my first tri of the season always. Finally, a big thanks to Rob and Tyler for their hospitality this weekend and for getting up early themselves to come cheer me on. I know how much it hurt them to not be able to race this one for their different reasons but it really meant a lot to me. Plus I know they will be right back where they should be next year, lined up next to me on the far left of the swim start!

  • Comments: Hy-Vee puts on a great event that attracts a lot of talent. This was my virgin triathlon last season so it was fun to race it again, even though the course had changed. We'll have to see if I can win a free entry for the third straight year next year.

  • Comments: It is run along with ITU so it is a world class event. Just about everything is taken care of. No protiens at the athlete recovery area and long massage wait time. That's not that big of a deal, everything else was great.

  • Comments: The race promoters did a great job dealing with the issues with flooding that they faced. Barring a few little logistical hassles, the race was well put together and well staffed. The expo was good and the goody bag and swag was A+. I will definately do this race again.

  • Comments: First - for the confusion and flooding the folks @ HyVee did and AWESOME job! I made sure to thank everyone I saw who was a volunteer! It was great and I am glad they worked it out so it was a true triathlon. As running is not my forte I would have hated a Du! What worked: Initial swim strategy - felt comfortable letting the lead pack jump in and run away while I settled in. Got the breathing down pretty well - handled that initial surge of panic and BOOM started enjoying the swim. I was surprised by this. I never really swam in an open water race before and open water training was not the same. It helped to see the guys hanging on the buoys and know - hey at least I can out swim those folks! 6 Nutrition strategy - peanut butter cliff bar and coffee @ 3:30 AM - water bottle before we leave the house. Water bottle on the trip down. Gu before we hit the beach. 2 gu's on the bike with one water bottle and one Gatorade bottle. UGH not enough water. Needed a water bottle exchange -

  • Comments: With all the flooding we've had around here, it's been a nightmare for Hy-Vee to put this event on. From changing venues and going to a du, and then back to a tri, they did a great job setting things up and making the best of a bad situation in the middle of a natural disaster which was the flood. Of course it helps that their headquarters are in W. DSM, so that they could devote tons of resources and personnel to this project! I was very happy to hear that the swim was on. There was not much more the directors could have done to make this a more successful event. I loved the post-race spread. The two transition zones were difficult to work with, but seriously, what else could they do? Great job. And lastly, terrible news with the death of Jim Mulligan during the event. He was a business and community leader in Des Moines, and he'll be missed, especially by his young family. Thoughts and prayers to them.
