  • Comments: The race promoters did a great job dealing with the issues with flooding that they faced. Barring a few little logistical hassles, the race was well put together and well staffed. The expo was good and the goody bag and swag was A+. I will definately do this race again.

  • Comments: First - for the confusion and flooding the folks @ HyVee did and AWESOME job! I made sure to thank everyone I saw who was a volunteer! It was great and I am glad they worked it out so it was a true triathlon. As running is not my forte I would have hated a Du! What worked: Initial swim strategy - felt comfortable letting the lead pack jump in and run away while I settled in. Got the breathing down pretty well - handled that initial surge of panic and BOOM started enjoying the swim. I was surprised by this. I never really swam in an open water race before and open water training was not the same. It helped to see the guys hanging on the buoys and know - hey at least I can out swim those folks! 6 Nutrition strategy - peanut butter cliff bar and coffee @ 3:30 AM - water bottle before we leave the house. Water bottle on the trip down. Gu before we hit the beach. 2 gu's on the bike with one water bottle and one Gatorade bottle. UGH not enough water. Needed a water bottle exchange -

  • Comments: Considering this race was scheduled to be a duathlon on Wednesday, and we raced a full olympic triathlon on Sunday was an incredible feat. Great race all around, best I have ever attended. Top Notch!

  • Comments: With all the flooding we've had around here, it's been a nightmare for Hy-Vee to put this event on. From changing venues and going to a du, and then back to a tri, they did a great job setting things up and making the best of a bad situation in the middle of a natural disaster which was the flood. Of course it helps that their headquarters are in W. DSM, so that they could devote tons of resources and personnel to this project! I was very happy to hear that the swim was on. There was not much more the directors could have done to make this a more successful event. I loved the post-race spread. The two transition zones were difficult to work with, but seriously, what else could they do? Great job. And lastly, terrible news with the death of Jim Mulligan during the event. He was a business and community leader in Des Moines, and he'll be missed, especially by his young family. Thoughts and prayers to them.

  • Comments: The folks of Des Moines and HyVee did a tremendous job in getting this race done! They did so in spite of many, many obstacles and my hat is off to the organizers of the race, the many volunteers and the city of Des Moines for making it happen! They had the safety of the athletes first and foremost in mind - and did everything they could to make the event the best it could be. For anyone who doesn't know, this was the race that under many circumstances wouldn't have happened at all. It was a great event!

  • Comments: I finished my first triathlon!!!!!!! I'm hooked and there's going to be many more races to come. Hy-Vee did a great job putting this on with all the adversity they had to deal with in the weeks preceding. I exceeded my own expectations and now know that I have a sub 2:30 in me. Time to revisit my goals :)

  • Comments: Credit needs to begiven to event officials for even having it with the flooding that occured in Des Moines and having to move race. 4:49 seconds faster then my first Oly tri and on a more difficult course. I'm happy.

  • Comments: A very good race overall, but when you consider everything the organizers had to deal with beforehand with changing it from a tri to a du back to a tri and changing locations, they did a great job. This is going to be a yearly event for me for the foreseeable future.

  • Comments: I can't say enough about the Hy-Vee Des Moines tri. I did this race last year and it blew me away. It is truly a top-notch event. Considering all of the flooding problems, course and venue changes, du vs. tri changes...the RDs knocked it out of the ball park. The volunteers were excellent. The only hiccup was at the very end of the day we had to sort through 2000 plastic bags to find our T1 stuff. This was a mess. I ended up hopping in the back of a flat-bed trailer that contained transition bags and was handing out bags to athletes who were standing around wondering how to find their stuff. The volunteers didn't know what to do. Otherwise the race went off without a hitch...with the exception of the poor guy who died. If you're within a days drive of this race, or can find cheap airfare, you've got to check this race out. You'll be blown away.

  • Comments: This race was extreamly well organized and staffed eventhough they had to move it and change it and do all this last minute crap to pull it off. Great race, great swag, great volunteers, huge finish line/grandstand.

  • Comments: I think it's incredible that the organizers were able to pull this off, considering the fact that they pulled out a new course and support within a two week period (thanks to all our wonderful flooding). Sure, there were lots of hiccups and less than ideal course features (two transition sites, many U-turns, etc), but there's no way I can fault all of the wonderful work and hours the organizers and volunteers put in to actually give us the tri.
