Lake Placid, New York
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
Overcast
Total Time = 15h 58m 41s
Overall Rank = 2183/
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 288/
Pre-race routine:

Two Chobani, two waterbottles
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 1h 41m 10s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was good. I need to focus on the swim to get a jump on the field in the future.
Transition 1
  • 09m 51s
Comments:

First Iron Transition. Did a good job.
Bike
  • 7h 10m 47s
  • 112 miles
  • 15.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike performance was below expectations. The second loop was filled with some self doubt, when I passed Shosh my head was in a bad place and I was questioning whether I would be able to finish.

Luckily I got my head back on the climb back up to Lake Placid. It was amazing to see the whole Rye Tri crew on Papa Bear. Definately screwed my head back on in preparation for the run course.
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition planning on the bike was a it dicey. I should have carried concentrate of my drink rather than trying to bring the real thing stashed in special needs. should look into a sippy thing for concentrate so that I can be more self reliant and get my drink as I need it rather than when it can be picked up.
Transition 2
  • 12m 50s
Comments:

First Iron T2. Forgot my computer on the bike. This caused me to have to re grab my bag from the hangers. Switched up to a new tri suit, not sure that I would do that in the future.
What would you do differently?:

1) Stick with one Tri Suit.
2) Try to remember the computer when hopping off bike
Run
  • 6h 44m 3s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 15m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked the run. Foot Pain plus exhaustion caused me to just walk it. Found Shosh on the second run loop around the barn; that helped my head immensely.
Post race
Warm down:

Some Pizza and Coke (heavy) in the finsher's area. A few bottles of water/malto back at the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My run conditioning was below usual because of recovery from my stress fracture. It would be interesting to see what my potential run time would be if I was able to have a regular trajectory on my run training.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

I have Bontrager Race Lite wheels. I was looking into renting Zipp 303's or 404's for race day for Ironman Lake Placid. What time will I save?

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
