The ones I've done were more like a triangle or a T (out, left, back, in). It keeps you closer to the shore where they can keep a better eye on you.  Most turn and swim across just past the where the breakers (waves) are.

So most likely you will be swimming against the current at some point?

Not necessarily. If the majority of the swim is parallel to the shore, you may end up swimming with the current.

Either way, everyone else will be the in the same boat as you (current-wise), so you'll all have the same advantage/disadvantage.

I have no idea what your swim will look like, but I wanted to share this link with you.

Happy Ocean Thoughts

One of the guys interviewed is a seasoned triathlete.  Pretty cool stuff.

When I did my OWS clinic in June the .5 mile swim we did was the Pacific Coast Triathlon course and the half mile started after you swam out past the breakers, you turned and swam the .5 mile along the shore and then you turned and swam back to shore. So, the swimming in and out didn't count as the .5 mile. I'm curious how often this is the case.

Have fun - in my opinion ocean swims are much more fun than any other type.

Never.  I had to go to the race website to check this out.  Accdg to the race website: The half-mile swim leg enters the protected waters of El Moro Cove approximately one third of a mile south of the swim finish, near the ramp leading to the transition area. Swimmers round buoys one eighth of a mile off the beach and swim northwest, paralleling the shore until abreast of the exit point.

So, about 1/8 mile out and in, 1/3 mile parallel.  just over 1/2 mile

To the OP, check the race website, they should have a course set up.  I've seen all sorts of courses, point to point around buoys, triangles, parallelograms... etc.

Ah...so we were misinformed. That is what the woman who ran the clinic told us, and since she runs clinics there a lot I figured she was right. Unless they were accounting for the detours we had to take around kelp beds. Since I wasn't signed up to do that one as most at the clinic were, I didn't check into it any further. Good to know. I would really hate to train for one length and discover I'll actually be swimming much further.
