You can read race reports from past years here:

If you want a race that weekend, I highly recommend the Lake Marion Triathlon.  It's worth the drive

I did the olympic last year.  Roads were rough in spots, but I wouldn't call them terrible.  I don't know what the last year has done to them.  It's a laid back, Randy race that has a large attendance.  Its a race.  I'm passing on it this year to go to Lake Marion with some friends.

It is fairly small - in a good way.  Although they are adding an Olympic distance this year, which might change that.  I think it's been going on for several years, but it's only been on my radar recently.   The Lakeville area does have rolling hills in general.  The bike routes are also new this year, so I couldn't say about this particular route.

Might as well check out the oly RR's too... The Oly and sprint run the same swim,  bike and run routes, the Oly just basically does 2 loops of each.

The roads were somewhat beat up, but it's pretty cool to have all of Wheelock Parkway completely closed for a 2 loop bike. It's a really spectator friendly event if that matters in your considerations.

the map for the tri indicates the we park at the Phalen park golf course.  Is that true?  or do we park elsewhere?

If memory serves, you can park at any of the lots throughout the golf course.   Unless you're a first-to-arrive sort, you can probably just follow the crowd.
