Subject: unexpected IM side effects

I would really like some advice on the best way to let my body heal. I’ve had some side effects the last 2 days I wasn’t expecting, besides the normal soreness, hurt toe nails, upset stomach, etc. (I experienced minimal soreness after my half's and after my marathons, and am used to the "trots" so what I'm talking about is new to me).

The pain at the end of the race was more than I’ve ever felt-laying in bed it felt like someone was stabbing my whole body with hundreds of knives. I thought my muscles and body would hurt more yesterday and today but I feel pretty good. I am just exhausted and hungry---all the time. I couldn’t get enough food yesterday, felt light headed last night and am STARVING still today. I ate 4 full meals + snacks yesterday, with seconds at the awards brunch too. When will this die down? I feel like I’ve gained weight also (weird), my pants are tight. Could this still be fluids I’m retaining? I ballooned during the race -scary- but I wouldn’t think this should still be a problem 2 days later. I’m going to try to get plenty of sleep this week, I’m pretty sure I’ll get sick; I usually do after marathons.

Any other advice or tips would be appreciated, I’m sure I have more questions but this is all I have now.

Not having done an IM myself, I'm gonna refrain from offering opinions. But you may be experiencing some fluid retention. Watching Kona online, I noticed how crazy-bloated Natascha Baddman looked in the last half of the run. I'm sure that just doesn't go away overnight.

Have you experienced similar stuff after running any of your marathons?

We talked about this earlier however I thought of a few more things...Remember that by the time you reached the run that your body was in a state of shock so it is not going to process things the same way as it would if you were in a Sprint or even a HIM so fluid retention etc are to be expected. Try to take in as much food as possible as you are probably still operating at a deficit. Drink, drink, drink as I am sure that you are somewhat dehydrated even though  you feel bloated.  The biggest thing is just rest...you should consider taking the rest of the year off and let your body heal after a long season. Just my opinion....congrats again I was really proud of you Saturday for being tough.

*disclaimer* Doing an iron is not all glamour!  That being said....

What I'm experiencing is totally new to me. I usually recover quite well from big races, wasn't that sore after my first marathon or half iron.

I am just suprised that I might still be retaining fluids after 2 days with as much as I've gone to the bathroom (both types). I crave meat after hard training days or marathons, but its usually that day or night. Not really suprised about yesterday with the hamburgers (I ate one in 2 minutes exactly-I timed myself) but I am suprised I felt sick and light headed when I was trying to go to bed. My stomach was still growling.

Even my toenails hurt. I've never lost one before. I wonder if this is what happens.

Hey Brett...did I read somewhere that ultra-distance races can be pretty traumatic on your kidneys? Could that explain water retention at +2 days?

Ok, I don't want to give off the feeling that I'm miserable or anything. In fact my boss said I'm more pleasant today (although his words were "less bitchy and complaining" ) than after my marathons. Good to know. I feel more discomfort than anything. Not in tune to whats going on because I'm not used to it, and that is a weird feeling for me.

I'm feeling lightheaded again, I just don't want to keep stuffing my face for days on end. How long should I just do what my body says until I go back to eating normally?

I should have worn my fat pants today.

Remember that you have depleated your bodies reserves about as low as they will go....it takes time to rebuild them...REST REST REST!!!

Jim I believe that you are right about the kidney's thing although I have not seen anything specific about it.

Ok, 3 days later...my pants are loose again, some of the bloating has gone down. The hunger is subsiding too, still eating a little more than normal but nothing outrageous.

Back to the feeling good soreness!

I have not done an IM, but in the marathon I did a few weeks ago I kept waking up all night because of acheyness and soreness. The next night was better, but not by much.

You have just poured all out your reserves for an entire waking day! You need time to heal.
