Subject: Getting songs off an iPod
I have about 2,000 songs on my iPod (3rd gen I think). Many of these songs were on my old laptop that got wiped out a few years ago. Many (all, whatever) of the songs were downloaded thru various methods not via iTunes, so Apple/iTunes aren't much help. I'd love to be able to get the songs from my iPod back to my new computer so I can upload it all to Google Music and have it all on the cloud and such. It looks like there are a host of 3rd party software that can do it, but does anyone have any specific recomendations? I've since started backing up everything on an XHD but the damage was pretty much done when my old laptop bricked without any notice.

I can't be of much help.  Sorry.

When I looked into it, what I found was they prevent this so someone with 60 gigs of songs can't drop them all on someone elses computer.  If you install Itunes on the new machine and sync the Ipad.  Poof, there goes all the music.

If it's purchased music from the Itunes store, they will let you do a courtasy re-download, but really only do that in emergencies (such as this).

That's pretty slick.  Wish I knew that about 7 years ago, lol.

I tried the second one and I think it was close to working but the CTRL+SHIFT thing was kind of hit or miss. I had to connect and reconnect half a dozen times. I'll try that again later and see if it does the trick. Thanks for the suggestions though.

There's a program called Senuti (itunes backwards) that works well in these situations. Works most easily in Mac environment but may help with PC as well.

I was able to get the songs on to my PC using that second method in the link above.

Connect laptop, hold CTRL+SHFT so it doesn't auto sync. Then go into the iPod through My Computer, make it so you can view hidden files, then buried in there are all the songs just in a strange format. I was able to copy them all into a folder on my desktop. The naming format of them is strange, especially the file name, but the properties (title, song, album, etc) are all there when I upload them onto Google Music or back into my iTunes (which doesn't have ALL these songs). Thanks for the help!

The 8.3 format is an old DOS naming convention standard, but I don't know why it carried over to this format. Pretty lame, actually, but the file contains the header information of the song.

Before installing iTunes software on your new computer just plug in your old iPod and it will have to install the driver and it will be recognized as an external drive. From there copy it all to whatever directory you want and then install iTunes and scan for media. I'm clueless on the cloud thing

Download a free program called "SharePod".
Works really well.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
