Sunny
Total Time = 1h 34m 47s
Overall Rank = 283/386
Age Group = 30-35
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

FRIDAY: mostly a rest day. did a short brick in the evening (B: 15 minutes, R: 10 minutes) to check out bike, practice T2, and also warm up muscles for stretching. did a long stretch. finished packing. meals - AM: cereal w/ soy milk and banana, latte, NOON: smoothie w/ yogurt, banana, and spirulina/protein powder, SNACK: popcorn w/ nutritional yeast, DINNER: beef stir fry w/ brown rice, green beans, corn, zuchinni, iced tea (aveda calming). SNACK: ice cream! asleep by 11pm - didn't sleep very well.

SATURDAY: up at 4:15am. finished packing. 1 cup steel cut oatmeal w/ honey and banana. emergen-c. on the road by 6am.
Event warmup:

did some yoga, played tag with ella, then did some more stretching. 45 mins before race - clif shot w/ water.
Swim
  • 08m 49s
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

this was my first co-ed swim. the men were much rougher than the all female wave in my first race. lots of shoving. several men were doing the breast stroke, so i had to pass them in order to not get kicked. overall, the swim was - fast. over before i knew it.
What would you do differently?:

still need to work on my TI form in race conditions. it all falls apart when i'm trying to go fast. this time i was better about leaving an arm extended at all time, mainly to protect my head. this may have also allowed me to go faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

don't have my time yet, but this seemed to go more smoothly. i was less flustered, probably because i've practiced or done transitions several times now.
Bike
  • 35m 42s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.81 mile/hr
Comments:

the bike also felt like it went very quickly. passed a very fit looking guy in a tri-suit riding a litespeed! almost wanted to turn and say 'come on now - i'm a chubby mom on a '82 miyata! pick up the pace, boy!', but i didn't. he passed me up a bit later, but was in site the rest of the ride.
What would you do differently?:

i need a new bike. i have sentimental attachments to the miyata - it is my dad's bike, he did his one and only tri on it, i did my first tri on it. that said, i think i would be faster and safer one something newer. shifting and braking are both iffy.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

this went quickly, but i happily wasted a few seconds running to the sidelines to give me 3 year old a kiss. she thought i was done with my race when i got in for T2, and was upset when i started to take off again.
What would you do differently?:

decided at the last minute to do another clif shot, just in case. not sure if i needed it, since it made my tummy gurgle a bit. either way, i think i need to have one stuffed in my shoe just in case i decide i need one - this time i had to dig in my tri bag to get it.
Run
  • 45m 18s
  • 4 miles
  • 11m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

i was happy just to run the whole way. i have walked at least part of EVERY race i've done this year (5k, 8k, first sprint tri). even though this run was longer than my last tri (4 miles versus 2.5), i was able to run the whole time. i think backing off on the last part of the bike, and also having the heart rate monitor on, both helped me stick with a slow but steady pace on the run.
What would you do differently?:

if i had known there was only one water station, i would have brought my running belt w/ water. i also might have skipped the clif shot i did in T2.
Post race
Warm down:

kissed my girls & bill, stretched, drank some emergen-c sport drink, changed clothes, had an apple. we went to the awards ceremony/luau thing. afterwards, we tried to go to dq, CLOSED, and then izzy's, also CLOSED (what, doesn't anyone eat ice cream at 10:30 in the morning?), so ended up at whole foods market to get some celebratory post-race ice cream!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of sleep and slow running speed. lack of sleep was hard to avoid, since i was nervous. did what i could that helped last time, but i was still up a lot. slow running speed - a constant battle, and am slowly improving over time.

Event comments:

seemed like there was some last minute confusing (in water start or running start?). also, not enough water stations on the running course. post-race event was a cool idea (luau), but even my toddler was disappointed 'there should be music and dancing!'.

heart rate was around 165 for the bike. peaked at a scary 185 on the BIG hill, so i held back a bit (many were off the bikes, and i heard that many lost their breakfast at the top of the big hill). since i struggled on the run at my first tri, i made sure that i took the last couple miles more slowly this time to get my heart rate down around 150 before i started the run. seemed to work well.
Wind: Little

hr was great. peaked around 180 on a slight hill, but otherwise it was around 165-175 the whole time. looked down on mile 3 and it was 147! lowest i can ever remember during a run. when i saw it was getting around 165 i tried to pick up my (slow) pace.
Course: meandering along paths and roads next to the river. some stretches were on sidewalk and the exhaust from the cars bothered me, but other stretches were wooded and beautiful.

times aren't posted for the race yet. my guess is they won't be until tuesday, what with the labor day holiday and all. as soon as they are i will add them, but thought i would do the race report anyway since its all fresh in my head.
