Swim
Comments: This was not a swim, but a short dip in the water. I was the third one out of the water in my wave. It was shortened due to the weather and rip currents. The lifeguards had red flags flying on the beach indicating that swimming was not encouraged. Hurrican Ivan had reshaped the beach creating ideal conditions for surfing, but not swimming. Tropical Storm Matthew was presently overhead with winds stirring up the surf and dropping rain on us. Not ideal conditions for a triathlon. As a result, the organizers shortened the swim course. They did not have any lifeguards in the water with us. Transition 1
Comments: Everything went smoothly. Bike
Comments: Wet, wet, wet and very windy. We had a head wind for half of the distance and didn't get the resultant tailwind on the return portion since it was blocked by all the condo's. The first half of the race was on a big 6 lane highway while the return portion was primarily on a narrow road that went along the beach, surrounded by tall buildings. Just had to be real careful going around turns. One guy was on my back wheel for about 3 miles. We went around a sharp turn and when I looked back, he was laid out on the pavement trying to wrestle out of his pedals. No one passed me once I got going on the bike. One guy did try. As he went around me, I looked at his leg and saw that he was 57 years old. I thought to myself, "no friggin' way" and put it into high gear. He never re-passed me but finished right behind me. My pace out was around 17-18 mph and on the way in, somewhere around 23-25 mph. What would you do differently?: Keep my mouth shut. There was so much spray from the other riders in front of me that when I'd close my mouth, it felt like I'd just eaten a handfull of sand. Transition 2
Comments: Put on the running shoes and took off. Run
Comments: This was my best 5k time ever, but my run still caused me to slip quite a few places from my swim and bike rank. I cramped up (probably due to all the beer and champagne the night before) and got a killer side stitch on the last mile. I really need to work on my endurance where it concerns running and finishing. This remains my big weakness. On the upside, a very, very attractive female triathlete in a very skimpy bathing suit passed me and I was tempted to pass her back up. However, for reasons I won't go into, I decided stay right where I was. I finished right behind her. What would you do differently?: Train, train, train!!! Post race
Warm down: Breathe! What limited your ability to perform faster: The fact that I lack aerobic conditioning. I need more of those little capillaries delivering oxygen to my legs. I hear they take time to build. Event comments: This was an unorganized, but fun event. It was not for the serious triathlete, but more just for the fun and pleasure of getting out and running. I enjoyed seeing Tony and Lane and we gathered at the end to take in the sweet smell of finishing. The photos below are: 1. Swim Exit (you can see the boardwalk that was destroyed by Ivan) 2. Bike Return 3. The finish (the pain is gone). 4. Three BT Amigo's (L-R Motivated, Tribesman, and Cavu9). Last updated: 2004-10-11 12:00 AM

Woke up, got to the race and laid out the transition gear. It was raining so I picked a rack spot near a moving truck, that way, I was able to put all my gear under the truck and out of the rain.
Unfortunately, there had been much drinking and eating in the days leading up to this race...not my normal pre-race routine. However, this was a short course and I was looking at it as more of a fun run than anything, which it certainly turned out to be.
Destin was not as banged up from Hurricane Ivan as I had imagined. Most of the docks or boardwalks were destroyed and you could see that there was an enormous amount of beach erosion. But, most if not all of the buildings were intact. The race organizers said the the transition area was covered in 4 feet of sand by Ivan up till just a few days ago. They had to bulldoze it out before the race.
Nothing, I stretched out and did jump in the water before the swim to get wet and get the blood flowing.
