Subject: Tri or Road?
Hey everyone, I am new to BT and to the sport. Have began training for next year and hope to do a couple of sprints next season. I was wondering what peoples opinions are on owning and training on a tri bike as opposed to a road bike, esspecially in the mountainous area of Coquitlam. Would it be better to be on a road bike if a decent amount of climbing is going to be done?

Also any advice on picking up a used bike around?

Id appreciate any suggestions and advice.

Depends on the kind of riding and racing you are planning on doing. If you are doing group rides, hills, and only short races, then a road bike may be for you. You can even throw on a set of shorty aero bars to make it somewhat tri-like. If you plan on going longer distances and want to be a bit more aggressive in your tris, a tri bike may be for you.

I got a road bike first and not too long later a tri bike. I do more training on my road bike, but I LOVE my tri bike. I'm faster on it and it just feels better for me.

As for buying a used bike. Look around at some shops and check out end of season deals. Also, get them to help you find out what size bike you need. Once you know this, check out:

A few good things come up now and again.

Hope this helps get you started!

Right on.... Thanks for the input i appreciate it. I stopped into Caps the other day and they had some good deals on stuff. Its a tough decision since I plan on throwing $1000-$1500 at something.

Sounds like the majority of people have a road bike in the arsenal before getting a Tri.

Yup. I have a road bike and use it for everything (training-wise and racing-wise). I do have a cyclocross bike, but that's for exceptionally dirty/wet rides and commuting. If you're just starting out, a road bike is all you need.

That said, Leah's trying to convince me that I need a tri bike, but I'm trying not to pay any attention to her.

I am the same as bergy just getting into and looking for well was looking for a bike. In one of my threads I was directed to the Cops for Cancer bikes. So I managed to pick up one of these bikes. I get it next week. They are $1000 and there are about 5 left various sizes. there is no tax receipt as it is not a donation because the money goes back into their Bike replacement fund for next years bikes. The Bikes are maintained every night by the tour mechanic that travels with them. Andrea( the one I talked to) wasn't sure about warranty but is looking into it for me.

This is the bike that they rode

um, excuse me?   I think I was trying to convince you that a full-suspension downhill rig was the way to go!!  Or maybe it's the single-speed fixie track bike!!

Damn, now I don't know WHAT to get! Maybe I'll have to pull a Leah and just get one of each.
