I watched the video of the Rutger's former head basketball coach today for the first tick.  Ticked me off mightily.

Question - what would would Mike Rice's ideal consequence be.  Sure - he got fired.  But what should really happen to make things right?

Since the coward didn't do anything illegal not sure what else you could do to punish him. What will, and should, most likely happen is he will have a very difficult time getting another high paying head coaching position. Between him and his punk of an assistant coach, I am not sure which is a bigger coward.

(And yeas I do some some of the irony between my avatar and this subject)

Agreed.

My gut reaction is eye for an eye and beat his azz, but a: that solves nothing, and b: it shows we're just as bad as him.  So...my question is this, how can this guy not get prosecuted for assault?  I don't care who you are, what he did is just not right.  It's on tape.  If I was a player, I'd have resisted the urge to retaliate and just called the police.

I'm with you, I don't understand how it's not assault.  Manhandling players, slamming them in the back, hitting them, and nailing them with the ball (not a pass) - how is this not assault?  I think criminal prosecution is merited in this situation.

Aw c'mon, totally not like that.  Carl Sagan's pinched  billions  and  billions of ladies...Mike Rice only threw balls at, cursed out, and shoved a handful of players.

I don't know if they complained or not.....but I don't know what kind of men we are talking about putting up with that crap.  I'm trying to imagine someone, in a position of power over me or not, treating me that way and us not fighting.  There is no way on hell I would let someone do that to me and not attack him....NO WAY!!  Hell, I've raised my son to fight back at that sort of treatment as well.  I may win or lose, but we're going to find out.

That is absolultely shameful......on both sides.

Agreed. I'm not saying I'm tough. I'm not saying I would win. But I am saying I would not respond well to that at all.

Rutgers is not a big time bb program.  The players on the team were prolly borderline D1 prospects, glad to have a scholarship.  Bowing up to the coach would probably cost them their spot on the team.

Kind of a cheapshot calling the 18-20 yo players shameful imo.

Really?  I was in the Marine Corps when I was 18-20.....and my Grandpa was storming a beach in the Pacific at that age.......I guess they can tell their kids and grandkids how they were getting beaned by basketballs and shoved around by an idiot.

I think I'll stick with shameful......thanks.

It doesn't matter.  Your other comment is wrong as well.  There is not a single player on that tea who's scholarship would have been in jeopardy if they would have punched that moron in his nose.  In fact........they'd be looking at a continued free ride at school and a fat payday from the University to go with it.

Nobody should put up with being treated that way......ever.  I didn't say I was a tough guy....I said I would fight. Lke I said, win or lose, throw a basketball at me or shove me, in anger, and watch what happens....... I've got references. Laughing

Ya, it's blatant abuse. Even back in my day, coaches would not lay a hand on you. Yes they would yell, yes they would man handle you or put you in position. But there is a big difference... and that was high school. That coach is much smaller than a lot of those players.

But I did see a video where the coach that showed the tape to management also said there were several brawls between coach and players that needed to get broke up. So a few of them didn't put up with it.

Obciously the assistant coach did nothing - people watching practice said nothing. Why should these young men think they would be supported?
How do you know if any of them would lose their scholarships. Guessing we are talking about young men of color who could not afford college without the scholarships.

Then that's just wrong thinking.  Geez....this isn't 1950. The assistant did nothing?  To hell with him too.  I saw where he resigned and said he was sorry he was ever a part of it.  Damn right!

If you are reading this and think that you can't fight back if you are being abused, under ANY circumstance.....you're just wrong.  You will always be wrong.  I don't even understand thinking like that.

It's one thing to know the right thing to do.. and another to be in a circumstance. I would NEVER advise my son to fight back unless his life/safety was threatened. Cheap shot? Something to report.

One thing he knows how to do.. very well... is defend and block a punch.
