In late April this year i decided to quit smoking and start training for Triathlon, good decision, right ? well, now after 4 months i  am dealing  with my body  spitting  out a lot of mucous and i am not sick or anything. So if you were a former smoker , how long did it take for you clean up your lungs ?

Actually, I read a article a long time ago when I first quit that stated you are not producing any more mucous than a non smoker, just that while you smoke your body doesn't get rid of it as well as it should naturally. Same with taste buds and sometimes coughing, smoking actually suppresses the natural part.

First-Congrats on quitting!! I quit 16 months ago, and still once in a while cough up something, um, unsavory.

It took probably 6 months for my body to get over the 'quit smoking' weirdness. I had everything from rashes to being really gassy. It was strange.

The good thing of coughing up crap, is your body is purging itself of the junk.

Again, congrats on quitting!

Congratulations!

Well ... years later and I still hock and blow out what training partners have called "unbelievable" amounts of goo ...

Just seems like part of the deal. It got much better after my BF taught me how to blow snot rockets. Before then ... well ... never mind.

Congratulations.

I smoked ~ a pack a day for 19 years and then cigars for 2 before I gave it all up. July 23rd marked 1 year of non-smoking.

I took me about 9 months before my lungs felt "clear". And then I finally knew what it felt like to really be able to breathe. The difference is unbelievable.

I believe I was doing something wrong or right, I'm not sure which.

I smoked a pack a day for about 22-ish years and just quit about a month ago. I've been running and biking for coming up on a year after a 9 year couch potato stint. I've been seriously working out for about two months now.

I only coughed for about a week and now there's not even any wheezy sounds during the deep breathing exercises, that's all gone already. Dunno. Might very well be an individual thing.

I smoked a pack a day for 30 years. I quit 21/2 years ago. I would say that it took at least 6 months before I stopped coughing productively. I am fine now...today I swam 3 miles!!! Congrats, stay with it, in the long run you will feel GREAT!

Just wanted to say congratulations!  I quit 8+ years ago after being a pack a day smoker for about 10 years.  I remember coughing stuff up for months but don't remember how long.  But in a couple of years you'll wonder how the heck you ever lived the life of a smoker.

I'm coming up on my 2-year non-smoking anniversary (will celebrate with a tri race that day). I smoked for 12 years, about 1/2 pack/day. I quit cold-turkey and never coughed up much at all (maybe it's all still stuck in there?) but felt better overall in a couple of weeks and then noticed how my breathing got easier and easier by the day.

Congratulations on quiting! There are quite a few threads here on BT about our former addiction and about how people have dealt with cravings. You'll have them for the rest of your life, you just learn to live with them better every day.

Everyone is a little bit different, and if you've quit multiple times, each time is a little different.

After a couple of months, the bad coughing and phlegm should subside.  There are a few sites that say after 6 months your lungs will be pretty well healed, others say longer.  You going through detox from a pretty potent addiction - your body is going to do weird things, just be strong.
