Achilles pain. I just got it Saturday night on a long run. I had to cut my run short by about 5 miles on Saturday, and by about 2.5 miles today. It's really painful, and even "grinding" a little bit. Am I doomed, or will a couple days rest/icing make it go away? I'm starting to feel like I have some sort of "marathon curse" on me. I had to back out of RnR San Diego because of my IT band, and now I have this awful pain, with Disney World in January. I really don't want to miss this race. When will I ever have the chance to run through the parks again?

REALLY DEPENDS. Not a single one of us can say without being a doctor or not having examined you. I tend to get achilles pain and its relatively short lived. Achilles tendonitis will take MUCH longer to heal.

- Are your shoes worn out?
- Are you doing a lot of running on CONCRETE? Not pavement, but CONCRETE? (I found running TTL = instant achilles pain).
- Do you wear highly cushioned shoes? (Actually shown to increase achilles issues by putting my strain on the tendon at impact - heel drops)
- Do you wear heels to work? DONT.
- Are your calves tight? Most lower tendon issues can be linked to calf tightness.
- Have you started a new hill or speed work program?

Just some thoughts. I LOVE the trigger point stuff for my calves, and have found taping up my achilles (as part of my plantar faciitis) has really helped! GOOD LUCK!

I experienced achilles pain during football in high school one year. It came about from doing too much too soon. It is TERRIBLE!

It took months to go away in my case, but I was still practicing with it. I was sent to a physical terrorist, who elevated my heal with pads to keep the range of motion of the achilles down. If it's the same overuse injury I had, it won't go away in a few days, as tendons and ligaments take a while to heal.

I'm really sorry to hear about your injury. Be easy on it for a while and see how it goes.

Bottom line is rest it!!!  Don't run on it while it's still inflammed.  Stay active with whatever it allows of course, but not running.

I have achilles tendonitis right now myself.  I am training for the Philadelphia Marathon which is Nov. 23.  My pain goes away if I rest and ice for a few days.  However, as soon as I do a long run the pain returns.  Arrrrgh!  The is the second marathon I have trained for.  The first marathon I had to back out of because of plantar fascitis (don't know how to spell that!).  Now I am worried I will have to back out of this one too.  I am so frustrated....I feel your pain!  I am not sure what to do.  My doctor says it is okay to run if my pain is not severe.  But that if the pain is anything above a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 then to stop.  All of my crazy marathon buddies say run through the pain. Yet all the research I have found indicates otherwise.

I am so confused!

I'm in the same boat Adela. Mine keeps coming back periodically but it does help when I ice it, rest it and stretch it (then repeat). When it got bad and I still had to train, I moved to the elliptical machine. It still keeps the cardio up, but lessens the impact.

I don't remember a "grinding" feeling; mine was just a sharp pain and burning. If it doesn't get better, see a doctor.

Best of luck.

That's what I've done in the past, and it DID NOT work! My worst injuries are the ones I tried to ignore. They got to the point where I had to take about 6-8 weeks off of running. I'm trying a new approach, which is to listen to my body and rest it when needed. I just hope that I don't have to rest too long. However, resting 1 week is much better than resting 7 weeks. My achilles does feel much better already, but it's not totally gone. I'll see if it's ok on Thursday and maybe do a short run.

Thanks for the tips, everyone!!

The last marathon I did (my first) I did most of my long runs in the water...due to plantar faciitis and my peroneal tendonitis flaring up again about 4 weeks or so out. Had NO trouble during the full, felt trained and had NO PAIN. Just a suggesstion so you can keep training and keep your "mileage" up. Water running is HARD! Read about it in RW from Deena Kastor, and other BTers, there is a good plan online if you want to follow straight water running for a while. Read my SD marathon RR!

I think I'm gonna try a short run tomorrow. Most of the pain is gone. All I've done these couple of days is a lot of yoga (every day since Sunday) and a lot of ice. Now I can't feel any pain at all unless I really press down on it! I think I'm cured (hopefully permanently!)!!!!

OMG I can't imagine water running! It just seems so boring. I'll have to find your RR. I'm very curious now.

I think water running is a great suggestion.

It isn't the same as running, but I used the elliptical to try to maintain some run fitness after
my accident. The lack of impact might help you maintain fitness and take some load off the
achilles.
