Subject: Beginner's 1st week training!
Well, i've nearly completed the 1st week of my training, i am finding the swimming very difficult, however i am enjoying it. The pool at my gym is 20metres long, at present i am concentrating on trying to front crawl ( Phew! never realised just how difficult this is, have swallowed more water than is in the pool i think!, My strategy at present is keeping the times as per my training log, but i am having to stop frequently due to either breathing technique, other people in the way or just sheer tiredness. Determined to carry on. Hopefully i will get more confidence.

Welcome!  Stick with the swimming--it just takes time.  Try to find some drills or, better, some coaching--swimming requires a lot of technique.

Johnyd...welcome to the site!  You got it, swimming is the toughest to get used to...but proportionally, it gets easier cause it's the event that takes the least time!  And they let you run it first, to boot.  Athena hit it right on the head...time in the pool is king, and BT has great people & resources to help you hone your technique as you get further into it.

Everyone swallows water when they start swimming...And no matter how much water you swallow, I'd bet a) they'll replace it in the pool, and b) somehow, you won't keep it in you.  Just guesses...but dont' sweat it unless it starts to detract from your workout.

But for now, welcome...and good luck with the training.

Hi Rick, thanks for your comments, yep i will need to be patient with the swimming, The other thing is my gym only has a 20metre pool, and at present i keep losing count of the distance.
Oh well early days

Johnyd - welcome to BT! Others have said it too, but the swim will come along pretty quickly with practice.  Hang around the site long enough and you will hear frequent stories from people who just started swimming a few months ago, and now are going distances they never thought possible.  I'm one of them - started in November of last year, and could barely go a lap of a 20 yard pool without a break, and now I'm doing 1000 yards continuously and still increasing.  Keep at it, it will come, and it feels great as it happens!
