Hmmm. Be careful what you wish for. Taper always sounds lovely until you're in it and you turn into an unbearable beast. It causes changes in your body and mood that can be really awful to deal with. I personally hate tapering and have to add bits of intensity to my low volume to keep from going insane.

HA!  I was gonna say it, but thought that ignorance might be bliss.... but yeah, taper is no fun.

I figure better to be forewarned than have it creep up! My HIM taper was hideous and no one wanted to be around me. I am dreading my IM taper and my coach may actually have to shorten it to keep me somewhat bearable What's going to happen to me in the recovery period?!?

I did 3 week run/bike taper for IM and kicked up my swimming which helped keep me sane during my IM taper...plus the Tour was on which helped keep me entertained.

Tapering I oh so look forward to it last year, this year not so much.

I think LazyMarathoner is dead on that it sounds lovely then turns into unbearable beast.

Me to my husband: Tapering for Rhode Island 70.3 starts next week
Husband to me: I need to buy more beer then.

I also turn into an unbearable beast - fun for all!

Can anyone explain why everyone seems to go crazy during their taper? I've only done sprints and Olympic distance races and have not had any problems yet. My first HIM is in September so maybe I'll find out what everyone keeps referring to......Jason

I think it's a little different for everyone. For some it's having extra time and stressing over the race. For others, like me, there is a physical change that is unpleasant. I got tired, irritable, suffered from severe insomnia to the point where I was actually up an entire night. After discussing how I felt with my coach we kept the volume low but added short bursts of intensity and this helped me tremendously. You have to figure out what it is that's making you crazy so you can adjust accordingly. I may have to lock myself in a room away from the world during IM taper. I cannot imagine the madness that will ensue
