Well, at week three on my 9th visit to the pool, I finally feel that I can swim a few laps without fear of drowning. I was so discouraged just a few days ago due to the fact that I can't seem to keep the water out of my nose. I never have had a formal lesson so it just seems so unnatural to breathe out my nose and in my mouth. I had, at that point, only done 1 lap with my face in the water. Today I did 5 laps all with my face in! Secret...think what you like...nose clips. Whoo hoo! I am actually looking forward to my next swim instead of waking at 4 am in a cold sweat dreading it!

Awesome!  At the very least, you'll finally be able to get some more laps in.

I still would recommend a lesson though  Proper breathing is essential if you want to keep getting better.  So major congrats, but keep working on that breathing.

Not being able to swim well (or at all) really stinks. Once I got my breathing dialed in, everything else fell into place.

First congrats
Second How do you breathe out the nose with the nose clip on, I was never able to do that, my ears always popped?

I don't use my nose at all...I breathe with my mouth the entire time.

I too was having problems swimming until I got a nose plug.  I'm glad you are having success.  After a few weeks with the nose plug and becoming more confortable breathing, I'm now trying to swim a few laps without it.

Congrats on the breakthrough!  I've heard quite a few people have had success with the noseplug, so if it works for you - go for it!

GREAT JOB!

You know, you don't have to breathe out of your nose when you put your head in the water... you can breathe out of your mouth.

I swim like a fish with it's mouth open... I just leave my mouth open the whole time and breathe out with my head in the water... and in when I turn my head.

If you think about it... when you run, you don't close your mouth to breathe out and open it to breathe in... right? So when you get in the pool and try to open/close your mouth at the right time... it's hard. Not to mention, it's not as easy to breathe out when your head in the water.

Yes, I have probably had some pretty gross stuff in my mouth at one time or another... but it's the only way I can swim and breathe. Especially if I'm swimming hard. Then I MUST keep my mouth open in/out of the water!

Keep swimming girl!

Whew!!!  I was beginning to think that I was the only one that did this!   I do the "swim like a fish" thing, too.  I always feel a little self-conscious about it, because I never see anyone else swimming with their mouth open.  It's almost like a habit with me.  I've had asthma since I was a teenager, so mouth-breathing is a normal concept for me...and it just naturally carried over into my swimming.  Glad to see I'm not the only one.
