Subject: Ironman LOU ~ Road or Tri Bike?

I posted this question in the Ironman Louisville race forum, too.

Which bike for IMLOU ~ Road or Tri?

The folks over on the race thread seem to agree that the Tri bike is the best option; however, I've had many recommendations to use the Road bike for this one.  Thoughts?

I will be riding the course many times this training season and will probably try both my Roadie and Roo (Tri bike), but just wanted to see what others thought as well.

Thanks in advance

tri bike. course really isn't that hilly at all. The only thing to worry about on the bike course are all of the cars! There is a reason why this IM doesn't sell out quickly!

There are very few triathlons that you would better off on a road bike (assuming you are well fit on your tribike) and IMLou is most definitely not one of them.

As said above, all things being equal the tri bike is definitely faster.  The climbs on the course are rollers, not mountains.

Coming from someone who did the race. I recommend a road bike, unless you are super strong on the bike or train on your tri bike on lots of hills. i was unprepared for the "rolling hills" !

I would say it's personal preference.  I did it on a tri-bike and had more than enough gear for the hills.  There are some sections where the wind was such that I was glad to have aero bars to be down on.

My recommendation would be tri-bike.

OP says she will ride the course many times in training.  If she does that on the tri bike she'll be plenty prepared.

Tri-bike hands down.  Not only will it be faster, but you will be able to eat while in aero and relax your body on the descents.

Road bike would be a big fat fail in my opinion.
