Subject: Around the Bay this weekend?

Good luck to anyone racing this weekend!

This is one of my favourites races - but I won't be participating this year (thank goodness because I caught a cold last week) to focus on training for the iron distance but I do think of this race fondly and wish those racing a great day out there!!

Don't get caught by the grim reaper!

I'm doing this event for the first time.   I have been off running for a couple of years due to injuries but started a marathon walking program in September leading to this.   I have registered for the walking race and plan to race walk the first 5km then continue with 6min run, 1 min walk.     2 weekends ago we ran the last 10km of the course (20km total).   Glad I did.  Those hills would have been a big surprise.

Any advise on race strategy?   I was thinking of just relying on the water stations.  Yes? or No?

I think relying on the water stations is just fine since I don't think the forecast is for weather anywhere like we've been having.  Your strategy of walking the first 5k will help you from overdoing the first half which is super easy to do which often leads to bad burnout on the hills.  And you've done the hills you know what to expect. :D

It will be a crowded race so just make sure to move off to the side when you take your walks and not to get too frustrated if there's traffic - better to take it easy than zig and zag all over the place to get around people - wastes too much energy.

Have a great day out there!

i'm out for my first as well, poorly prepared due to an early-january injury but hoping for the best. put down some solid training in november and december, and managed to get 43km, 47km and 50km weeks in before tapering this week with a hard, hilly 10 miler on march 10th that showed me i still have some hill strength.

if you see a shuffling figure in red & black with blonde braids, say hi Smile

cheers!

Will do!  Being a walker I get to start at 8:30.   Was thinking of starting at 9:30 to be 'part of the crowd' but when I found out there are 12,000 racers on Sunday, got freaked by that and decided to get my 8:30 head start!

My bib # is 8010.   I usually wear braids too, but mine are grey.

Hope you have a great race!

MechengPhoenix - 2012-03-25 1:48 PM How'd it go?

I think I beat my goal by 36 seconds.

7/48 age group 55-59
70/356 female
96/459 overall.

Walked the first 4km and then did a 6min run with 1 min walk, and walked and sometimes stopped at the water stations (twice - to get my gel down with the water).

Awesome day.

Splits:
1:19.01 at 10km (7:54/km
1:55:35 at 15km (7:42/km
2:33.16 at 20km (7:39/km
3.49.24 at 30km (7:39/km

I knew with 4 km left after the BIG climb, that I wouldn't make my goal if I took the rest of my walk breaks, so I think I ran straight for the last 3km.

Met SO many great people.

sub-3:05 for me (3:04:22.6), despite the lack of training. met or exceeded every goal i had, zero issues on course; couldn't really have had a better day!

with your hour head start, latestarter (contradiction in terms? Tongue out), it looks like you would've reached the line ahead of me.

full race report here, including photos from my blackberry along the way:

Nice race!   I loved your race report and photos.   If I sent you my e-mail any chance you could send them to me?   I added you as a friend in case you want to read my race report and check out some pictures (mostly of me) in my album.    At least you can put a face to the name.  Smile    Oh, and I loved the new rendition of the song.   You and your hubby are quite talented.

thanks! re: the photos - it's probably easiest if you click on one to open the picasa album for that blog entry, then right click and "save as" on the ones you want. my email is sometimes a little unreliable for sending photos!

read your report; sounds like you had a really good race! would have been amazing to see the lead runners come flying past.

also saw you swim at forest heights - i might run into you there sometime, as i've been known to head there for a swim on occasion (when my regular pool is closed or the scheduling doesn't workSmile

cheers!
